From its source in the South, the blues’ simple but expressive forms had become by the 1960s among the most important influences on the growth of music that is popular throughout America.
Although instrumental accompaniment is almost universal in the blues, the blues is essentially a a form that is vocal. Blues tunes are lyrical rather than narrative; blues singers are expressing feelings as opposed to telling stories. The emotion expressed is generally one of melancholy or sadness, commonly due to problems in love.
To express this musically, blues performers use vocal techniques for example melisma (keeping up a single syllable across several pitches), rhythmic techniques including syncopation, and instrumental techniques for example “choking” or bending guitar strings on the neck or implementing a metal slide or bottleneck to the guitar strings to create a whining, voice-like sound.
Generally the first two and a half measures of each line are committed to singing, the last measure and a half consisting of an instrumental “break” that responses, recurs, or complements the vocal line. When it comes to practical (i.e., conventional European) harmony, the simplest blues harmonic progression is described as follows (I, IV, and V refer respectively to the first or tonic, fourth or subdominant, and fifth or dominant notes of the scale):

African influences are evident in the blues tonality, the call and response pattern of the falsetto break in the vocal style, the repeated refrain construction of the blues stanza, and the imitation of vocal idioms by instruments, particularly the guitar and harmonica.
The origins of the blues are badly recorded. Blues developed in the southern United States after the American Civil War (1861–65). Southern black men, most of whom came from the milieu of agricultural workers derived from and mainly played blues.
The earliest references to blues date back to the 1890s and early 1900s. In 1912 black bandleader W.C. Handy’s composition “Memphis Blues” was published. It became quite popular, and afterward many other Tin Pan Alley songs entitled blues started to appear.

The blues of Georgia and the Carolinas is noted for its clarity of enunciation and regularity of beat. Affected by white and ragtime folk music, it is more melodic than the Texas and Mississippi styles.
High, clear singing accompanied by supple guitar lines that consist typically of single characterizes the Texas blues -string picked arpeggios rather than strummed chords. Blind Lemon Jefferson was by far the most influential Texas bluesman. Mississippi Delta blues is the most intense of the three styles and has been the most influential. Vocally, it is the most language-like, and the guitar accompaniment is percussive and rhythmic; a slide or bottleneck is often used. The Mississippi style is symbolized by Charley Patton, Eddie (“Son”) House, and Robert Johnson, among others.

Rainey, Ma [Credit: Archive Photographs]The first blues recordings were made in the 1920s by black women such as Mamie Smith, Ma Rainey, Ida Cox, and Bessie Smith. These performers were mostly stage vocalists backed by jazz bands; their style is referred to as classic blues.
The Great Depression and the World Wars caused the geographic dispersal of the blues as millions of blacks left the South for the cities of the North. The blues became adapted to the more complex urban environment. The harmonica that was amplified and the electric guitar created a driving sound of psychological and rhythmic intensity that was great.

It was Chicago, nonetheless, that played the greatest part in the growth of urban blues. In the 1920s and ’30s Memphis Minnie, Tampa Red, Big Bill Broonzy, and John Lee (“Sonny Boy”) Williamson were popular Chicago performers.
Many other musical styles have been influenced by the blues. Blues and jazz are closely linked; such seminal jazzmen as Jelly Roll Morton and Louis Armstrong employed blues elements in their music. Rhythm and soul music and blues also reveal obvious blues tonalities and shapes. The blues have had their biggest impact on rock music.
Rock singers for example Elvis Presley frequently used blues material. British rock musicians in the 1960s, especially the Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton, and John Mayall, were powerfully influenced by the blues, as were such American rock musicians as Mike Bloomfield, Paul Butterfield, and the Allman Brothers Band.
