Often it’s the little matters that guitarists contain that make all the difference. Many people have played with Candy Man by Gary Davis, for quite a while, with various amounts of success. I have played with this for years, and I determined to take a closer look to see what is happening.

Gospel and Ragtime Blues Guitar Lessons – Reverend Gary Davis
Naturally, we know that he used his thumb and only one finger for his right hand picking, but that’s just the beginning of his brilliance for blues music. Loosen up those fingers and let’s go … One Of The Last Great Blues Guitar Masters

The Very Best in Acoustic Blues From the Master

Reverend Gary Davis was unusual in many respects. The complexity and musical richness of his blues guitar music is celebrated, and we could consider ourselves to be really lucky that his prowess remained undiminished in his later years. Unlike many blues men, who stopped playing and restarted after they had been ‘discovered’ again, Gary Davis never stopped playing guitar and many of his tunes in his can be found on Youtube.

It was still his custom until he became in vogue once again, then began to record and play live gigs once again to play with the blues in the roads around Harlem. He was also very willing to give guitar lessons to practically anyone that asked him to blues, it appears, and so the skills were passed on to young guitarists like many others and Stephan Grossman.

Oops, something went wrong.

Firstly, Davis used the thumb and index finger of his right hand to fingerpick all of those sounds that were incredibly intricate. Needless to say, his finger appeared to move independently from his thumb and could proceed rapidly. He also used finger picks to play guitar, which helps to be more exact.

RAGTIME OR BLUES GUITAR, gOSPEL

He was very adept in any key, either major or minor, but it was not this fact that exemplified his guitar music (for me.) The timing of his thumb beats were rock solid, as you would anticipate, and to produce lightning, or he could break out of the alternating bass pattern at will, either to double time and produce syncopated rhythms single string runs.

For the latter, he’d pick on a string alternately with his thumb and finger, as though he were using a plectrum. This was remarkable enough, but he frequently sang at exactly the same time which is some trick – try it sometime!

When needed, to complete a phrase or a run, giving the impression of other finger being used his thumb would also leap across to the high strings. The result was an unique experience of ragtime guitar playing which has never been equaled.

Most guitar players have a sort of a running battle with their guitar strings, besides the ordinary issues relating to keeping them in tune and changing them. The questions are rife for the pupil guitarist. It’s not satisfactory that we need to learn finger picking guitar, but on top of that, our fingers damage and we aren’t certain if we’re using the guitar strings that are right or not!

What sort of strings are not bad for playing acoustic blues guitar, for instance. If you’re lucky enough (and rich enough) to have a personal teacher, then it is a piece of cake. Just ask his advice and rely on his practical expertise. But if you buy blues guitar lessons from the internet, or on a DVD, you’re generally left to your own devices, relying on word of mouth from friends, or good old trial and error.

First off, it depends on, what style of acoustic guitar to want to play. This can be significant if you have a great guitar with a low action. A string that vibrates too much can touch one of the frets, causing a terrible buzzing sound. Also, they are a bit hard on the fretting fingers.

Of course, we have to build up those callouses, but medium gauge guitar strings desire a little more finger pressure to hold them strongly on the frets. For blues style finger picking, most players prefer light gauge, which range from 0.054 to 0.011 inch.

There does not seem much difference between the two sets of strings, but believe me – you’ll feel it! The difference becomes clear when you attempt to turn one of the strings across to increase the note a semi tone and create that wailing blues sound that is wonderful.

It feels really hard – you only can not push it far enough, easily enough. By contrast, most people find additional light strings a bit too skinny (0.052 to 0.010). Saying that, many brilliant world-class guitarists use lights, as it all depends upon your finger management.

STRING QUALITY IS NOT An ISSUE WITH MODERN STRINGS AND MANUFACTURING METHODS.

Fundamental 80/20 bronze wound strings can be purchased quite cheaply, but it is worth while phosphor bronze, which are a bit more mellow and longer lasting. buying spending a little more and Martin make significant performance, or an SP set, which is more durable and excellent for that particular studio session. But in case you are a street player, don’t bother with the higher quality – change them frequently and play the guitar hard.

I’m not much of a purist as far as guitar quality goes, but I do like to have strings that are really good. Having examined many over the last 40 years or so, I look to come back to light gauge Martin strings, which are great for picking acoustic blues guitar.

When playing finger style with naked finger, I typically use two pair a month and purchase phosphor bronze strings in the SP range. For bottleneck I additionally use always SP and Medium gauge, same maker.
