The Very Best in Acoustic Blues From the Master
Reverend Gary Davis was not common in many regards. The complexity and musical fullness of his blues guitar music is legendary, and we could consider ourselves to be very lucky that his prowess remained undiminished in his later years. Unlike many blues men, who ceased playing and restarted after they had been ‘discovered’ again, Gary Davis never quit playing guitar and many of his songs in his can be located on Youtube.
GARY DAVIS – ROAD BLUES VOCALIST
It was still his custom until he became in vogue once again, then started to record and play live gigs once again to play with the blues in the roads around Harlem. He was also quite willing to give blues guitar lessons to almost anyone that asked him, it appears, and so the skills were passed on to young guitarists such as Stephan Grossman and many others.

Naturally, his finger could move fast and seemed to move independently from his thumb. He also used finger picks to play guitar, which helps to be more exact.
GOSPEL, RAGTIME OR BLUES GUITAR
He was quite skillful in any key, either major or minor, but it wasn’t this fact that exemplified his guitar music (for me.) He could break out of the alternating bass pattern at will, either to, and the timing of his thumb beats were rock solid, as you would expect double time and produce syncopated rhythms, or to produce lightning fast single string runs.
For the latter, he’d pick a string alternately with his thumb and finger, as though he were using a plectrum. This was notable enough, but he frequently sang at exactly the same time which is some trick – try it sometime!
When needed, to complete a run or a phrase, giving the impression of other finger used his thumb would additionally leap across to the high strings. The result was an unique experience of ragtime guitar playing which has never been equaled.

Most guitar players have a kind of a running battle with their guitar strings, besides the normal issues relating to altering them and keeping them in tune. The questions are rife for the student guitarist. It is not sufficient that we have to learn finger picking guitar, but on top of that, our fingers hurt and we aren’t sure if we are using the guitar strings that are right or not!
What type of strings are not bad for playing with acoustic blues guitar, by way of example. If you’re fortunate enough (and rich enough) to have a private teacher, then it’s a piece of cake. Merely ask his advice and rely on his practical expertise. But if you buy blues guitar lessons from the internet, or on a DVD, you’re usually left to your own devices, relying on word of mouth from friends, or good old trial and error.
To start, it depends on, what design of acoustic guitar to want to play. This can be significant if you have a great guitar with a low action. A string that vibrates too much can touch one of the frets, causing a horrible buzzing sound. Also, they’re a bit tough on the fretting fingers.
ACOUSTIC BLUES GUITAR STRINGS – MEDIUM GUITAR OR LIGHT GAUGE FOR FINGER STYLE?
Obviously, we have to build up those callouses, but medium gauge guitar strings need a little more finger pressure to hold them firmly on the frets.
There doesn’t appear much difference between the two sets of strings, but believe me – you’ll feel it! The difference becomes obvious when you try to turn one of the strings across to raise the note a semi-tone and produce that wailing blues sound that is wonderful.
It feels extremely hard – you simply can not shove it far enough, easily enough. By comparison, most people locate additional light strings a bit too thin (0.052 to 0.010). Saying that, many outstanding world-class guitarists use lights, as it all depends on your finger control.
STRING QUALITY ISN’T An ISSUE WITH MANUFACTURING PROCEDURES AND MODERN STRINGS.
Fundamental 80/20 bronze wound strings can be purchased fairly cheaply, but it is worth while phosphor bronze, which are a lasting. longer bit more mellow and buying spending a little more and Martin make performance that is significant, or an SP set, which is more durable and great for that special studio session. But in case you are a road player, don’t trouble with the quality that is higher – change them frequently and play with the guitar hard.
I’m not much of a purist as far as guitar quality goes, but I do enjoy to have strings that are really good. Having tested many over the last 40 years or so, I always look to come back to light gauge Martin strings, which are great for picking on acoustic blues guitar.
When playing with fingerstyle with naked finger, I typically use two pair a month and buy phosphor bronze strings in the SP range. For bottleneck I also use always SP and Medium gauge, same producer.
