Often it’s the little things that guitarists comprise that make all the difference. Many of us have played with Candy Man by Gary Davis, with various amounts of success, for a long time. I’ve played this for years, and then I decided to take a closer look to see what is going on.

Reverend Gary Davis
Naturally, we understand that he used his thumb and only one finger for his right hand picking, but that’s merely the start of his brilliance for blues music. Loosen up those fingers and let us go … Among The Last Great Blues Guitar Masters

The Very Best in Acoustic Blues From the Master

Reverend Gary Davis was uncommon in many regards. The complexity and musical fullness of his blues guitar music is celebrated, and we could consider ourselves to be very blessed that his prowess remained undiminished in his later years. Unlike many blues men, who quit playing and restarted after they’d been ‘discovered’ again, Gary Davis never ceased playing guitar and many of his songs in his can be found on Youtube.

GARY DAVIS – ROAD BLUES VOCALIST

It was still his custom to play the blues in the streets around Harlem once again, then began to record and play live shows once again until he became in vogue. He was also very willing to give blues guitar lessons to almost anyone that asked him, it seems, and thus the skills were passed on to young guitarists including Stephan Grossman and many others.

Oops, something went wrong.

To begin with, Davis used the thumb and index finger of his right hand to fingerpick all of those unbelievably intricate sounds. Obviously, his finger seemed to move separately from his thumb and could move rapidly. He also used finger picks to play guitar, which helps to be more accurate.

GOSPEL, RAGTIME OR BLUES GUITAR

He was quite skillful in any key, either major or minor, but it was not this fact that exemplified his guitar music (for me.)

For the latter, he would pick a string alternately with his thumb and finger, as though he were using a plectrum. This was notable enough, but he frequently sang at exactly the same time which is some trick – try it sometime!

When needed, to complete a phrase or a run, giving the impression of other finger used his thumb would also jump across to the high strings. The result was an unique experience of ragtime guitar playing which has never been equaled.

Most guitar players have a kind of a running battle with their guitar strings, aside from the normal issues relating to changing them and keeping them in tune. The questions are rife for the pupil guitarist. It’s not satisfactory that we have to learn finger picking on guitar, but on top of that, our fingers hurt and we are not certain if we are using the right guitar strings or not!

What kind of strings are not bad for playing acoustic blues guitar, for example. In case you are fortunate enough (and rich enough) to have a personal teacher, then it’s a piece of cake. Only ask his advice and rely on his practical experience. But if you purchase blues guitar lessons from the net, or on a DVD, you are usually left to your own devices, relying on word of mouth from friends, or good old trial and error.

The best strings for acoustic blues guitar are really the ones that suit your design, which might change over time, but first of all it depends an awful lot on your own touch and the effect you need to give with your music.

BEST ACOUSTIC GUITAR STRINGS FOR BLUES

To start, it depends on, what style of acoustic guitar to need to play. This can be significant if you’ve got a great guitar with a low action. A string that vibrates too much can touch one of the frets, causing a horrible buzzing sound. Additionally, they are a bit hard on the fretting fingers.

Of course, we have to build up those callouses, but medium gauge guitar strings want a little more finger pressure to hold them firmly on the frets. For blues style finger picking, most players prefer light gauge, which range from 0.054 to 0.011 inch.

There doesn’t seem much difference between the two sets of strings, but believe me – you’ll feel it! The difference becomes apparent when you try to bend one of the strings across to raise the note a semi-tone and produce that wailing blues sound that is wonderful.

It feels really hard – you just can’t push it far enough, easily enough. By comparison, most people locate additional light strings a bit too skinny (0.052 to 0.010). Saying that, many exceptional world-class guitarists use lights, as it all depends on your finger management.

STRING QUALITY ISN’T An ISSUE WITH PRODUCTION METHODS AND MODERN STRINGS.

Basic 80/20 bronze wound strings can be bought fairly cheaply, but it’s worth while phosphor bronze, which are a lasting. longer bit more mellow and buying spending a little more and Martin make an SP set, which is stronger and great for that particular studio session, or important performance. However, if you are a street player, do not bother with the quality that is higher – change them regularly and play with the guitar hard.

I am not much of a purist as far as guitar quality goes, but I do enjoy to have great strings. Having tested many over the last 40 years or so, I always look to come back to light gauge Martin strings, which are great for picking on acoustic blues guitar.

When playing with finger-style with naked finger, I buy phosphor bronze strings in the SP range and normally use two pair a month. For bottleneck I also use Medium gauge, same producer and always SP.
