Often it is the little things that guitarists include that make all the difference. Many of us have played with Candy Man by Gary Davis, with various levels of success, for quite a long time. I’ve played with this for years, and then I decided to take a closer look to see what is going on.

Gospel and Ragtime Blues Guitar Lessons – Reverend Gary Davis
Obviously, we know that he used only one finger and his thumb for his right hand picking, but that’s merely the start of his genius for blues music. Loosen up those fingers and let us go … Among The Last Great Blues Guitar Masters

The Best in Acoustic Blues From the Master

Reverend Gary Davis was uncommon in many respects. The complexity and musical richness of his blues guitar music is celebrated, and we could consider ourselves to be quite fortunate that his prowess remained undiminished in his later years. Unlike many blues men, who stopped playing and restarted after they had been ‘discovered’ again, Gary Davis never quit playing guitar and many of his songs in his can be found on Youtube.

GARY DAVIS – STREET BLUES SINGER

It was still his custom to play the blues in the streets around Harlem until he became in vogue once again, then started to record and play live shows once again. He was also quite willing to give guitar lessons to nearly anyone that asked him to blues, it seems, and thus the skills were passed on to young guitarists including many others and Stephan Grossman.

Oops, something went wrong.

Of course, his finger could proceed rapidly and seemed to move separately from his thumb. He additionally used finger picks to play guitar, which helps to be more precise.

RAGTIME OR BLUES GUITAR, gOSPEL

He could break out of the alternating bass pattern at will, either to, and the timing of his thumb beats were rock solid, as you would anticipate double time and generate syncopated rhythms, or to create lightning single string runs.

For the latter, he would pick on a string alternately with his thumb and finger, as though he were using a plectrum. This was remarkable enough, but he frequently sang at the same time which is some trick – try it sometime!

His thumb would additionally jump across to the high strings when needed, to complete a run or a phrase, giving the impression of other finger being used. The result was an unique experience of ragtime guitar playing which has never been equaled.

Most guitar players have a kind of a running battle with their guitar strings, apart from the normal issues relating to keeping them in tune and altering them. The questions are rife for the pupil guitarist. It’s not sufficient that we have to learn finger picking guitar, but on top of that, our fingers damage and we are not certain if we are using the right guitar strings or not!

What type of strings are not bad for playing with acoustic blues guitar, by way of example. If you are lucky enough (and rich enough) to have a personal teacher, then it is a piece of cake. Only ask his guidance and rely on his practical expertise.

BEST ACOUSTIC GUITAR STRINGS FOR BLUES

First off, it depends on, what style of acoustic guitar to want to play. These strings are great for clipping with a plectrum held loosely between thumb and finger, and do not vibrate a lot when hit. This can be important if you have a great guitar with a low action. Also, they’re a bit hard on the fretting fingers.

ACOUSTIC GUITAR BLUES GUITAR STRINGS – MEDIUM GUITAR OR LIGHT GAUGE FOR FINGER STYLE?

Of course, we need to build up those callouses, but medium gauge guitar strings want a little more finger pressure to hold them strongly on the frets.

There doesn’t seem much difference between the two sets of strings, but believe me – you will feel it! The difference becomes apparent when you attempt to turn one of the strings across to increase the note a semitone and create that wailing blues sound that is wonderful.

It feels really challenging – you just can not shove it far enough, readily enough. By contrast, most folks find extra light strings a bit too thin (0.052 to 0.010). Saying that, many brilliant world-class guitarists use lights, as it all depends upon your finger management.

STRING QUALITY ISN’T An ISSUE WITH PRODUCTION PROCEDURES AND MODERN STRINGS.

Fundamental 80/20 bronze wound strings can be bought quite cheaply, but it’s worth while spending a little more and purchasing phosphor bronze, which are a bit more mellow and longer lasting. Martin make important performance, or an SP set, which is more durable and excellent for that special studio session. But if you are a street player, don’t bother with the higher quality – change them often and play with the guitar hard.

I’m not much of a purist as far as guitar quality goes, but I do enjoy to have great strings. Having tested many over the last 40 years or so, I always seem to come back to light gauge Martin strings, which are great for picking acoustic blues guitar.

When playing finger style with bare finger, I purchase phosphor bronze strings in the SP range and usually use two pair a month. For bottleneck I also use Medium gauge, same manufacturer and always SP.
