Frequently it’s the little matters that guitarists include that make all the difference. Many of us have played with Candy Man by Gary Davis, with various amounts of success, for a long time. I have played this for years, and I decided to take a closer look to see what is going on.

Reverend Gary Davis
Needless to say, we understand that he used just one finger and his thumb for his right hand picking, but that is just the beginning of his genius for blues music. Loosen up those fingers and let’s go … One Of The Last Great Blues Guitar Masters

The Best in Acoustic Blues From the Master

Reverend Gary Davis was uncommon in many respects. The sophistication and musical richness of his blues guitar music is celebrated, and we could consider ourselves to be quite fortunate that his prowess remained undiminished in his later years. Unlike many blues guys, who ceased playing and restarted after they’d been ‘discovered’ again, Gary Davis never stopped playing guitar and many of his songs in his can be located on Youtube.

GARY DAVIS – STREET BLUES VOCALIST

It was still his custom to play the blues in the streets around Harlem once again, then began to record and play live gigs once again until he became in vogue. He was also quite willing to give blues guitar lessons to virtually anyone that asked him, it appears, and thus the skills were passed on to young guitarists like many others and Stephan Grossman.

Oops, something went wrong.

To begin with, Davis used the thumb and index finger of his right hand to fingerpick all of those very complex sounds. Needless to say, his finger could move rapidly and seemed to move separately from his thumb. He also used finger picks to play guitar, which helps to be more exact.

GOSPEL, RAGTIME OR BLUES GUITAR

He was very expert in any key, either major or minor, but it wasn’t this fact that exemplified his guitar music (for me.) The timing of his thumb beats were rock solid, as you’d anticipate, and he could break out of the alternating bass pattern at will, either to double time and generate syncopated rhythms, or to produce lightning fast single string runs.

For the latter, he would pick a string alternately with finger and his thumb, as though he were using a plectrum. This was remarkable enough, but he often sang at the same time which is some trick – try it sometime!

When needed, to complete a run or a phrase, giving the impression of other finger being used his thumb would additionally jump across to the high strings. The result was an unique encounter of ragtime guitar playing which has never been equaled.

Most guitar players have a kind of a running battle with their guitar strings, besides the normal issues relating to keeping them in tune and changing them. The questions are rife for the pupil guitarist. It is not sufficient that we need to learn finger picking guitar, but on top of that, our fingers damage and we are not sure if we’re using the guitar strings that are right or not!

What type of strings are not bad for playing with acoustic blues guitar, for instance. Should you be lucky enough (and rich enough) to have a personal teacher, then it’s a piece of cake. Merely ask his advice and rely on his practical expertise.

The best strings for acoustic blues guitar are really the ones that suit your style, which might change over time, but first of all it depends an awful lot in your touch and the effect you need to give with your music.

To start, it depends on, what design of acoustic guitar to desire to play. This can be significant if you’ve got a great guitar with a low action. A string that vibrates too much can touch one of the frets, causing a terrible buzzing sound. Also, they are a bit difficult on the fretting fingers.

Medium gauge guitar strings need a little more finger pressure to hold them hard on the frets, although obviously, we must build up those callouses. For blues style finger picking, most players prefer light gauge, which range from 0.054 to 0.011 inch.

There doesn’t seem much difference between the two sets of strings, but believe me – you’ll feel it! The difference becomes obvious when you try to flex one of the strings across to raise the note a semi tone and produce that wonderful wailing blues sound.

It feels extremely challenging – you only can not shove it far enough, readily enough. By contrast, most folks find additional light strings a bit too thin (0.052 to 0.010). Saying that, many superb world class guitarists use lights, as it is dependent upon your finger management.

STRING QUALITY IS NOT An ISSUE WITH PRODUCTION METHODS AND MODERN STRINGS.

Fundamental 80/20 bronze wound strings can be purchased fairly cheaply, but it’s worth while spending a little more and buying phosphor bronze, which are a bit more mellow and longer lasting. Martin make performance that is significant, or an SP set, which is stronger and great for that particular studio session. However, if you’re a street player, do not bother with the quality that is higher – play the guitar hard and change them often.

I’m not much of a purist as far as guitar quality goes, but I do enjoy to have strings that are really good. Having analyzed many over the last 40 years or so, I always seem to come back to light gauge Martin strings, which are excellent for picking on acoustic blues guitar.

When playing with fingerstyle with naked finger, I buy phosphor bronze strings in the SP range and usually use two pair a month. For bottleneck I additionally use Medium gauge, same maker and constantly SP.
