Frequently it’s the small things that guitarists include that make all the difference. Many of us have played with Candy Man by Gary Davis, with various levels of success, for quite a while. I’ve played this for years, and then I determined to take a closer look to see what is going on.
Reverend Gary Davis
Obviously, we know he used just one finger and his thumb for his right hand picking, but that is just the start of his genius for blues music. Loosen up those fingers and let us go … Among The Last Great Blues Guitar Masters
The Best in Acoustic Blues From the Master
Reverend Gary Davis was not common in many respects. The sophistication and musical fullness of his blues guitar music is legendary, and we could consider ourselves to be really blessed that his prowess remained undiminished in his later years. Unlike many blues men, who quit playing and restarted after they’d been ‘discovered’ again, Gary Davis never quit playing guitar and many of his tunes in his can be found on Youtube.
GARY DAVIS – ROAD BLUES VOCALIST
It was still his habit until he became in vogue once again, then began to record and play live shows once again to play with the blues in the streets around Harlem. He was also quite willing to give blues guitar lessons to nearly anyone that asked him, it seems, and thus the skills were passed on to young guitarists including many others and Stephan Grossman.

To begin with, Davis used the thumb and index finger of his right hand to fingerpick all of those sounds that were incredibly intricate. Naturally, his finger could go rapidly and seemed to move separately from his thumb. He additionally used finger picks to play guitar, which helps to be more accurate.
RAGTIME OR BLUES GUITAR, gOSPEL
The timing of his thumb beats were rock solid, as you’d expect, and to produce lightning fast, or he could break out of the alternating bass pattern at will, either to double time and generate syncopated rhythms single string runs.
For the latter, he’d pick on a string alternately with finger and his thumb, as though he were using a plectrum. This was notable enough, but he often sang at exactly the same time which is some trick – try it!
His thumb would also jump across to the high strings when needed, to complete a run or a phrase, giving the impression of other finger being used. The result was an unique experience of ragtime guitar playing which has never been equaled.

Most guitar players have a sort of a running battle with their guitar strings, besides the regular issues relating to altering them and keeping them in tune. The questions are rife for the student guitarist. It is not satisfactory that we have to learn finger picking guitar, but on top of that, our fingers damage and we aren’t sure if we’re using the right guitar strings or not!
What kind of strings are not bad for playing with acoustic blues guitar, for instance. Should you be lucky enough (and rich enough) to have a private teacher, then it is a piece of cake. Only ask his advice and rely on his practical expertise.
To begin with, it depends on, what design of acoustic guitar to need to play. These strings are great for clipping with a plectrum held loosely between thumb and finger, and do not vibrate a lot when hit. This can be significant if you have a great guitar with a low action. A string that vibrates too much can touch one of the frets, causing a horrible buzzing sound. Also, they’re a bit hard on the fretting fingers.

Obviously, we need to build up those callouses, but medium gauge guitar strings want a little more finger pressure to hold them strongly on the frets. For blues style finger picking, most players prefer light gauge, which range from 0.054 to 0.011 inch.
There does not seem much difference between the two sets of strings, but believe me – you’ll feel it! The difference becomes clear when you attempt to bend one of the strings across to increase the note a semi tone and create that wailing blues sound that is wonderful.
It feels extremely difficult – you just can’t push it far enough, readily enough. By contrast, most folks locate additional light strings a bit too skinny (0.052 to 0.010). Saying that, many outstanding world class guitarists use lights, as it is dependent upon your finger management.
STRING QUALITY ISN’T An ISSUE WITH MODERN STRINGS AND PRODUCTION PROCESSES.
Basic 80/20 bronze wound strings can be purchased quite cheaply, but it’s worth while spending a little more and purchasing phosphor bronze, which are a bit more mellow and longer lasting. Martin make an SP set, which is stronger and great for that special studio session, or performance that is important. But in case you are a road player, do not trouble with the higher quality – change them regularly and play with the guitar hard.
I’m not much of a purist as far as guitar quality goes, but I do enjoy to have strings that are great. Having examined many over the last 40 years or so, I always seem to come back to light gauge Martin strings, which are great for picking on acoustic blues guitar.
When playing with finger-style with naked finger, I generally use two pair a month and buy phosphor bronze strings in the SP range. For bottleneck I also use consistently SP and Medium gauge, same producer.
