Often it is the little matters that guitarists include that make all the difference. Many people have played Candy Man by Gary Davis, for a long time, with various levels of success. I’ve played with this for years, and I decided to take a closer look to see what is happening.

Gospel and Ragtime Blues Guitar Lessons – Reverend Gary Davis
Of course, we know that he used just one finger and his thumb for his right hand picking, but that is only the beginning of his brilliance for blues music. Loosen up those fingers and let’s go … One Of The Last Great Blues Guitar Masters

The Best in Acoustic Blues From the Master

Reverend Gary Davis was uncommon in many regards. The complexity and musical richness of his blues guitar music is celebrated, and we could consider ourselves to be quite blessed that his art remained undiminished in his later years. Unlike many blues men, who quit playing and restarted after they had been ‘discovered’ again, Gary Davis never quit playing guitar and many of his tunes in his can be located on Youtube.

GARY DAVIS – ROAD BLUES VOCALIST

It was still his custom until he became in vogue once again, then started to record and play live gigs once again to play the blues in the streets around Harlem. He was also quite willing to give guitar lessons to almost anyone that asked him to blues, it appears, and so the skills were passed on to young guitarists for example many others and Stephan Grossman.

Oops, something went wrong.

Firstly, Davis used the thumb and index finger of his right hand to fingerpick all of those very intricate sounds. Of course, his finger seemed to move independently from his thumb and could move quickly. He also used finger picks to play guitar, which helps to be more precise.

GOSPEL, RAGTIME OR BLUES GUITAR

He was quite proficient in any key, either major or minor, but it was not this fact that exemplified his guitar music (for me.)

For the latter, he would pick a string alternately with his thumb and finger, as though he were using a plectrum. This was impressive enough, but he frequently sang at the same time which is some trick – try it!

When needed, to complete a phrase or a run, giving the impression of other finger used his thumb would also jump across to the high strings. The result was an unique encounter of ragtime guitar playing which has never been equaled.

Most guitar players have a sort of a running battle with their guitar strings, besides the normal issues relating to keeping them in tune and altering them. The questions are rife for the pupil guitarist. It’s not satisfactory that we have to learn finger picking guitar, but on top of that, our fingers damage and we are not certain if we are using the right guitar strings or not!

What sort of strings are good for playing with acoustic blues guitar, for example. In case you are lucky enough (and rich enough) to have a personal teacher, then it’s a piece of cake. Merely ask his advice and rely on his practical experience.

To start, it depends on, what style of acoustic guitar to desire to play. This can be important if you’ve got a great guitar with a low action. A string that vibrates too much can touch one of the frets, causing a horrible buzzing sound. Additionally, they are a bit tough on the fretting fingers.

ACOUSTIC BLUES GUITAR STRINGS – MEDIUM GUITAR OR LIGHT GAUGE FOR FINGER STYLE?

Obviously, we must build up those callouses, but medium gauge guitar strings want a little more finger pressure to hold them strongly on the frets.

There does not seem much difference between the two sets of strings, but believe me – you will feel it! The difference becomes apparent when you try to bend one of the strings across to raise the note a semi-tone and create that lovely wailing blues sound.

It feels really difficult – you only can’t push it far enough, easily enough. By contrast, most individuals locate extra light strings a bit too skinny (0.052 to 0.010). Saying that, many superb world class guitarists use lights, as it all depends on your finger control.

STRING QUALITY ISN’T An ISSUE WITH PRODUCTION METHODS AND MODERN STRINGS.

Fundamental 80/20 bronze wound strings can be purchased quite cheaply, but it is worth while phosphor bronze, which are a lasting. longer bit more mellow and purchasing spending a little more and Martin make performance that is significant, or an SP set, which is stronger and excellent for that special studio session. But if you’re a road player, do not bother with the quality that is higher – play with the guitar hard and change them often.

I’m not much of a purist as far as guitar quality goes, but I do enjoy to have really good strings. Having analyzed many over the last 40 years or so, I seem to come back to light gauge Martin strings, which are great for picking on acoustic blues guitar.

When playing finger style with naked finger, I buy phosphor bronze strings in the SP range and normally use two pair a month. For bottleneck I also use Medium gauge, same maker and constantly SP.
