Often it’s the little things that guitarists contain that make all the difference. Many of us have played Candy Man by Gary Davis, with various amounts of success, for quite a long time. I have played with this for years, and then I decided to take a closer look to see what is happening.

Gospel and Ragtime Blues Guitar Lessons – Reverend Gary Davis
Naturally, we understand he used just one finger and his thumb for his right hand picking, but that is just the start of his brilliance for blues music. Loosen up those fingers and let’s go … One Of The Last Great Blues Guitar Masters

The Best in Acoustic Blues From the Master

Reverend Gary Davis was uncommon in many respects. The intricacy and musical richness of his blues guitar music is legendary, and we could consider ourselves to be really lucky that his prowess remained undiminished in his later years. Unlike many blues guys, who quit playing and restarted after they had been ‘discovered’ again, Gary Davis never quit playing guitar and many of his songs in his can be found on Youtube.

GARY DAVIS – ROAD BLUES VOCALIST

It was still his custom to play the blues in the roads around Harlem once again, then started to record and play live shows once again until he became in vogue. He was also very willing to give blues guitar lessons to virtually anyone that asked him, it seems, and so the skills were passed on to young guitarists like Stephan Grossman and many others.

Oops, something went wrong.

To begin with, Davis used the thumb and index finger of his right hand to fingerpick all of those incredibly complicated sounds. Of course, his finger appeared to move separately from his thumb and could go quickly. He also used finger picks to play guitar, which helps to be more accurate.

RAGTIME OR BLUES GUITAR, gOSPEL

He was quite expert in any key, either major or minor, but it wasn’t this fact that exemplified his guitar music (for me.)

For the latter, he would pick a string alternately with finger and his thumb, as though he were using a plectrum. This was notable enough, but he often sang at the same time which is some trick – try it sometime!

His thumb would also jump across to the high strings when needed, to finish a run or a phrase, giving the impression of other finger used.

Most guitar players have a kind of a running battle with their guitar strings, besides the ordinary issues relating to altering them and keeping them in tune. The questions are rife for the student guitarist. It is not satisfactory that we must learn finger picking on guitar, but on top of that, our fingers hurt and we are not sure if we are using the right guitar strings or not!

What sort of strings are good for playing with acoustic blues guitar, by way of example. Should you be fortunate enough (and rich enough) to have a personal teacher, then it’s a piece of cake. Just ask his advice and rely on his practical expertise. But if you purchase blues guitar lessons from the web, or on a DVD, you’re usually left to your own devices, relying on word of mouth from friends, or good old trial and error.

First off, it depends on, what design of acoustic guitar to want to play. Blue grass musicians go for a medium gauge guitar string, which goes from 0.054 inch to 0.013 inch. These strings are great for clipping with a plectrum held loosely between thumb and finger, and do not vibrate a lot when struck. This can be significant if you’ve got a great guitar with a low action. A string that vibrates too much can touch one of the frets, causing a terrible buzzing sound. Also, they are a bit tough on the fretting fingers.

Obviously, we need to build up those callouses, but medium gauge guitar strings want a little more finger pressure to hold them strongly on the frets. For blues style finger picking, most players prefer light gauge, which range from 0.054 to 0.011 inch.

There does not appear much difference between the two sets of strings, but believe me – you’ll feel it! The difference becomes apparent when you attempt to bend one of the strings across to raise the note a semi tone and produce that wailing blues sound that is lovely.

It feels extremely challenging – you simply can’t shove it far enough, easily enough. By comparison, most people locate additional light strings a bit too lean (0.052 to 0.010). Saying that, many outstanding world-class guitarists use lights, as it all is dependent upon your finger control.

STRING QUALITY IS NOT An ISSUE WITH MODERN STRINGS AND MANUFACTURING PROCEDURES.

Fundamental 80/20 bronze wound strings can be bought fairly cheaply, but it is worth while phosphor bronze, which are a lasting. longer bit more mellow and buying spending a little more and Martin make important performance, or an SP set, which is more durable and great for that special studio session. However, in case you are a street player, do not trouble with the quality that is higher – change them often and play the guitar hard.

I am not much of a purist as far as guitar quality goes, but I do enjoy to have strings that are really good. Having examined many over the last 40 years or so, I seem to come back to light gauge Martin strings, which are excellent for picking acoustic blues guitar.

When playing with finger style with naked finger, I usually use two pair a month and buy phosphor bronze strings in the SP range. For bottleneck I additionally use consistently SP and Medium gauge, same producer.
