Frequently it’s the little things that guitarists contain that make all the difference. Many of us have played with Candy Man by Gary Davis, for a long time, with various levels of success. I have played this for years, and then I determined to take a closer look to see what’s happening.

Reverend Gary Davis
Obviously, we understand he used his thumb and only one finger for his right hand picking, but that’s only the start of his genius for blues music. Loosen up those fingers and let’s go … Among The Last Great Blues Guitar Masters

The Best in Acoustic Blues From the Master

Reverend Gary Davis was unusual in many respects. The sophistication and musical fullness of his blues guitar music is legendary, and we could consider ourselves to be quite blessed that his prowess remained undiminished in his later years. Unlike many blues men, who ceased playing and restarted after they’d been ‘discovered’ again, Gary Davis never quit playing guitar and many of his songs in his can be found on Youtube.

It was still his custom to play the blues in the roads around Harlem until he became in vogue once again, then began to record and play live shows once again. He was also very willing to give guitar lessons to virtually anyone that asked him to blues, it appears, and so the skills were passed on to young guitarists such as Stephan Grossman and many others.

Oops, something went wrong.

Naturally, his finger could go quickly and seemed to move separately from his thumb. He also used finger picks to play guitar, which helps to be more precise.

The timing of his thumb beats were rock solid, as you would anticipate, and he could break out of the alternating bass pattern at will, either to double time and produce syncopated rhythms, or to create lightning single string runs.

For the latter, he’d pick a string alternately with his thumb and finger, as though he were using a plectrum. This was impressive enough, but he often sang at the same time which is some trick – try it!

When needed, to complete a run or a phrase, giving the impression of other finger being used his thumb would also jump across to the high strings.

Most guitar players have a kind of a running battle with their guitar strings, aside from the ordinary issues relating to keeping them in tune and changing them. The questions are rife for the pupil guitarist. It’s not satisfactory that we have to learn finger picking on guitar, but on top of that, our fingers hurt and we are not certain if we’re using the right guitar strings or not!

What kind of strings are great for playing acoustic blues guitar, for instance. If you are fortunate enough (and rich enough) to have a private teacher, then it’s a piece of cake. Merely ask his guidance and rely on his practical expertise.

BEST ACOUSTIC GUITAR STRINGS FOR BLUES

First off, it depends on, what design of acoustic guitar to desire to play. These strings are great for clipping with a plectrum held loosely between thumb and finger, and don’t vibrate a lot when struck. This can be significant if you’ve got a great guitar with a low action. Additionally, they’re a bit hard on the fretting fingers.

Medium gauge guitar strings want a little more finger pressure to hold them firmly on the frets, although of course, we must build up those callouses. For blues style finger picking, most players prefer light gauge, which range from 0.054 to 0.011 inch.

There does not seem much difference between the two sets of strings, but believe me – you’ll feel it! The difference becomes apparent when you attempt to turn one of the strings across to increase the note a semi-tone and create that lovely wailing blues sound.

It feels extremely hard – you only can not push it far enough, readily enough. By comparison, most people find additional light strings a bit too skinny (0.052 to 0.010). Saying that, many superb world class guitarists use lights, as it all is dependent upon your finger control.

STRING QUALITY ISN’T An ISSUE WITH MANUFACTURING PROCESSES AND MODERN STRINGS.

Fundamental 80/20 bronze wound strings can be bought fairly cheaply, but it is worth while phosphor bronze, which are a lasting. longer bit more mellow and buying spending a little more and Martin make significant performance, or an SP set, which is stronger and excellent for that particular studio session. However, if you are a street player, do not trouble with the higher quality – change them frequently and play the guitar hard.

I’m not much of a purist as far as guitar quality goes, but I do like to have great strings. Having tested many over the last 40 years or so, I look to come back to light gauge Martin strings, which are excellent for picking acoustic blues guitar.

When playing finger style with bare finger, I normally use two pair a month and purchase phosphor bronze strings in the SP range. For bottleneck I also use Medium gauge, same manufacturer and constantly SP.
