Often it is the little things that guitarists contain that make all the difference. Many of us have played with Candy Man by Gary Davis, with various amounts of success, for a long time. I have played with this for years, and I determined to take a closer look to see what’s happening.

Gospel and Ragtime Blues Guitar Lessons – Reverend Gary Davis
Obviously, we understand he used just one finger and his thumb for his right hand picking, but that’s just the beginning of his brilliance for blues music. Loosen up those fingers and let us go … One Of The Last Great Blues Guitar Masters

The Best in Acoustic Blues From the Master

Reverend Gary Davis was uncommon in many regards. The complexity and musical richness of his blues guitar music is legendary, and we could consider ourselves to be really fortunate that his art remained undiminished in his later years. Unlike many blues men, who quit playing and restarted after they had been ‘discovered’ again, Gary Davis never ceased playing guitar and many of his songs in his can be located on Youtube.

GARY DAVIS – STREET BLUES VOCALIST

It was still his custom until he became in vogue once again, then began to record and play live gigs once again to play the blues in the streets around Harlem. He was also quite willing to give guitar lessons to virtually anyone that asked him to blues, it appears, and thus the skills were passed on to young guitarists for example many others and Stephan Grossman.

Oops, something went wrong.

First of all, Davis used the thumb and index finger of his right hand to fingerpick all of those amazingly complex sounds. Naturally, his finger could go fast and seemed to move separately from his thumb. He also used finger picks to play guitar, which helps to be more exact.

He was quite expert in any key, either major or minor, but it wasn’t this fact that exemplified his guitar music (for me.)

For the latter, he’d pick on a string alternately with his thumb and finger, as though he were using a plectrum. This was remarkable enough, but he frequently sang at the exact same time which is some trick – try it!

His thumb would also leap across to the high strings when needed, to complete a phrase or a run, giving the impression of other finger used.

Most guitar players have a kind of a running battle with their guitar strings, besides the regular issues relating to keeping them in tune and altering them. The questions are rife for the student guitarist. It’s not satisfactory that we need to learn finger picking on guitar, but on top of that, our fingers damage and we aren’t certain if we are using the right guitar strings or not!

What type of strings are not bad for playing with acoustic blues guitar, for example. If you are lucky enough (and rich enough) to have a personal teacher, then it is a piece of cake. Merely ask his advice and rely on his practical experience. But if you purchase blues guitar lessons from the web, or on a DVD, you are generally left to your own devices, relying on word of mouth from friends, or good old trial and error.

First off, it depends on, what design of acoustic guitar to desire to play. This can be important if you have a great guitar with a low action. A string that vibrates too much can touch one of the frets, causing a horrible buzzing sound. Also, they’re a bit hard on the fretting fingers.

Medium gauge guitar strings desire a little more finger pressure to hold them firmly on the frets, although obviously, we need to build up those callouses. For blues style finger picking, most players prefer light gauge, which range from 0.054 to 0.011 inch.

There doesn’t seem much difference between the two sets of strings, but believe me – you will feel it! The difference becomes obvious when you try to flex one of the strings across to raise the note a semi tone and create that lovely wailing blues sound.

It feels extremely challenging – you only can not shove it far enough, readily enough. By comparison, most people find additional light strings a bit too skinny (0.052 to 0.010). Saying that, many outstanding world class guitarists use lights, as it all is dependent upon your finger control.

STRING QUALITY IS NOT An ISSUE WITH MANUFACTURING METHODS AND MODERN STRINGS.

Fundamental 80/20 bronze wound strings can be purchased fairly cheaply, but it is worth while spending a little more and purchasing phosphor bronze, which are a bit more mellow and longer lasting. Martin make significant performance, or an SP set, which is stronger and excellent for that special studio session. But in case you are a road player, don’t bother with the quality that is higher – play with the guitar hard and change them frequently.

I’m not much of a purist as far as guitar quality goes, but I do enjoy to have great strings. Having examined many over the last 40 years or so, I look to come back to light gauge Martin strings, which are excellent for picking on acoustic blues guitar.

When playing finger style with bare finger, I buy phosphor bronze strings in the SP range and normally use two pair a month. For bottleneck I also use constantly SP and Medium gauge, same maker.
