Often it is the little things that guitarists contain that make all the difference. Many of us have played with Candy Man by Gary Davis, for quite a long time, with various degrees of success. I have played this for years, and I determined to take a closer look to see what’s going on.

Reverend Gary Davis
Naturally, we know that he used just one finger and his thumb for his right hand picking, but that is only the start of his genius for blues music. Loosen up those fingers and let us go … One Of The Last Great Blues Guitar Masters

The Best in Acoustic Blues From the Master

Reverend Gary Davis was unusual in many respects. The intricacy and musical richness of his blues guitar music is legendary, and we could consider ourselves to be very lucky that his prowess remained undiminished in his later years. Unlike many blues men, who ceased playing and restarted after they’d been ‘discovered’ again, Gary Davis never ceased playing guitar and many of his songs in his can be located on Youtube.

GARY DAVIS – ROAD BLUES VOCALIST

It was still his custom until he became in vogue once again, then began to record and play live gigs once again to play with the blues in the roads around Harlem. He was also quite willing to give blues guitar lessons to practically anyone that asked him, it seems, and thus the skills were passed on to young guitarists such as many others and Stephan Grossman.

Oops, something went wrong.

To start with, Davis used the thumb and index finger of his right hand to fingerpick all of those incredibly complicated sounds. Naturally, his finger appeared to move separately from his thumb and could move fast. He additionally used finger picks to play guitar, which helps to be more accurate.

GOSPEL, RAGTIME OR BLUES GUITAR

The timing of his thumb beats were rock solid, as you’d expect, and to create lightning fast, or he could break out of the alternating bass pattern at will, either to double time and produce syncopated rhythms single string runs.

For the latter, he’d pick on a string alternately with his thumb and finger, as though he were using a plectrum. This was impressive enough, but he often sang at exactly the same time which is some trick – try it!

When needed, to complete a phrase or a run, giving the impression of other finger used his thumb would additionally leap across to the high strings. The result was an unique experience of ragtime guitar playing which has never been equaled.

Most guitar players have a kind of a running battle with their guitar strings, besides the regular issues relating to changing them and keeping them in tune. The questions are rife for the student guitarist. It is not satisfactory that we must learn finger picking guitar, but on top of that, our fingers hurt and we are not certain if we’re using the right guitar strings or not!

What type of strings are great for playing with acoustic blues guitar, by way of example. Should you be lucky enough (and rich enough) to have a personal teacher, then it’s a piece of cake. Only ask his guidance and rely on his practical experience.

To begin with, it depends on, what style of acoustic guitar to need to play. These strings are great for clipping with a plectrum held loosely between thumb and finger, and do not vibrate a lot when hit. This can be important if you’ve got a great guitar with a low action. Also, they are a bit challenging on the fretting fingers.

Obviously, we have to build up those callouses, but medium gauge guitar strings want a little more finger pressure to hold them firmly on the frets.

There doesn’t seem much difference between the two sets of strings, but believe me – you will feel it! The difference becomes apparent when you attempt to bend one of the strings across to increase the note a semi tone and create that wonderful wailing blues sound.

It feels extremely difficult – you simply can not push it far enough, easily enough. By comparison, most folks find extra light strings a bit too lean (0.052 to 0.010). Saying that, many brilliant world class guitarists use lights, as it depends upon your finger management.

STRING QUALITY ISN’T An ISSUE WITH MODERN STRINGS AND PRODUCTION PROCESSES.

Basic 80/20 bronze wound strings can be purchased quite cheaply, but it is worth while spending a little more and buying phosphor bronze, which are a bit more mellow and longer lasting. Martin make an SP set, which is stronger and great for that particular studio session, or performance that is significant. However, if you are a street player, don’t trouble with the quality that is higher – change them often and play the guitar hard.

I’m not much of a purist as far as guitar quality goes, but I do enjoy to have really good strings. Having tested many over the last 40 years or so, I look to come back to light gauge Martin strings, which are excellent for picking on acoustic blues guitar.

When playing with fingerstyle with naked finger, I purchase phosphor bronze strings in the SP range and typically use two pair a month. For bottleneck I additionally use consistently SP and Medium gauge, same manufacturer.
