Reverend Gary Davis was not common in many respects. The sophistication and musical richness of his blues guitar music is legendary, and we could consider ourselves to be very lucky that his prowess remained undiminished in his later years. Firstly, Davis used the thumb and index finger of his right hand to fingerpick all of those very intricate sounds. Obviously, his finger could move rapidly and appeared to move independently from his thumb. He also used finger picks to play guitar, which helps to be more exact.
RAGTIME OR BLUES GUITAR, gOSPEL
For the latter, he’d pick a string alternately with finger and his thumb, as though he were using a plectrum. This was notable enough, but he often sang at the same time which is some trick – try it!
When needed, to finish a phrase or a run, giving the impression of other finger used his thumb would also jump across to the high strings. The result was an unique experience of ragtime guitar playing which has never been equaled.

Most guitar players have a kind of a running battle with their guitar strings, apart from the ordinary issues relating to changing them and keeping them in tune. What sort of strings are good for playing with acoustic blues guitar, by way of example. If you are lucky enough (and rich enough) to have a personal teacher, then it is a piece of cake. BEST ACOUSTIC GUITAR STRINGS FOR BLUES
To begin with, it depends on, what design of acoustic guitar to want to play. Blue grass musicians go for a medium gauge guitar string, which goes from 0.054 inch to 0.013 inch. This can be significant if you’ve got a great guitar with a low action. A string that vibrates too much can touch one of the frets, causing a horrible buzzing sound. Additionally, they’re a bit challenging on the fretting fingers.

tune your guitar strings with a strobe tuner
Medium gauge guitar strings want a little more finger pressure to hold them strongly on the frets, although obviously, we need to build up those callouses. For blues style finger picking, most players prefer light gauge, which range from 0.054 to 0.011 inch.
There doesn’t seem much difference between the two sets of strings, but believe me – you will feel it! The difference becomes apparent when you attempt to bend one of the strings across to raise the note a semitone and produce that wonderful wailing blues sound.
It feels really challenging – you simply can’t shove it far enough, readily enough. By comparison, most folks find additional light strings a bit too lean (0.052 to 0.010). STRING QUALITY IS NOT An ISSUE WITH PRODUCTION METHODS AND MODERN STRINGS.
Fundamental 80/20 bronze wound strings can be bought quite cheaply, but it’s worth while phosphor bronze, which are a bit more mellow and longer lasting. buying spending a little more and Martin make an SP set, which is stronger and excellent for that special studio session, or important performance. However, if you’re a street player, do not trouble with the higher quality – change them often and play the guitar hard.
I’m not much of a purist as far as guitar quality goes, but I do enjoy to have strings that are great. Having analyzed many over the last 40 years or so, I always look to come back to light gauge Martin strings, which are excellent for picking on acoustic blues guitar.
When playing with finger-style with naked finger, I normally use two pair a month and buy phosphor bronze strings in the SP range. For bottleneck I additionally use Medium gauge, same producer and consistently SP.
