Often it’s the small matters that guitarists include that make all the difference. Many people have played Candy Man by Gary Davis, for quite a long time, with various levels of success. I have played this for years, and I determined to take a closer look to see what is going on.

Gospel and Ragtime Blues Guitar Lessons – Reverend Gary Davis
Obviously, we understand he used his thumb and just one finger for his right hand picking, but that’s merely the start of his genius for blues music. Loosen up those fingers and let us go … Among The Last Great Blues Guitar Masters

The Best in Acoustic Blues From the Master

Reverend Gary Davis was not common in many respects. The complexity and musical fullness of his blues guitar music is celebrated, and we could consider ourselves to be very blessed that his art remained undiminished in his later years. Unlike many blues men, who stopped playing and restarted after they’d been ‘discovered’ again, Gary Davis never stopped playing guitar and many of his songs in his can be found on Youtube.

GARY DAVIS – ROAD BLUES SINGER

It was still his custom to play the blues in the roads around Harlem once again, then started to record and play live gigs once again until he became in vogue. He was also quite willing to give guitar lessons to practically anyone that asked him to blues, it appears, and so the skills were passed on to young guitarists including many others and Stephan Grossman.

Oops, something went wrong.

First of all, Davis used the thumb and index finger of his right hand to fingerpick all of those sounds that were incredibly complicated. Obviously, his finger could move quickly and appeared to move separately from his thumb. He also used finger picks to play guitar, which helps to be more exact.

GOSPEL, RAGTIME OR BLUES GUITAR

He was very expert in any key, either major or minor, but it was not this fact that exemplified his guitar music (for me.) The timing of his thumb beats were rock solid, as you’d anticipate, and he could break out of the alternating bass pattern at will, either to double time and produce syncopated rhythms, or to create lightning fast single string runs.

For the latter, he would pick a string alternately with finger and his thumb, as though he were using a plectrum. This was remarkable enough, but he often sang at exactly the same time which is some trick – try it sometime!

When needed, to finish a phrase or a run, giving the impression of other finger being used his thumb would also jump across to the high strings.

Most guitar players have a kind of a running battle with their guitar strings, besides the regular issues relating to altering them and keeping them in tune. The questions are rife for the student guitarist. It is not sufficient that we have to learn finger picking guitar, but on top of that, our fingers damage and we aren’t certain if we are using the right guitar strings or not!

What type of strings are great for playing with acoustic blues guitar, by way of example. If you are lucky enough (and rich enough) to have a personal teacher, then it is a piece of cake. Merely ask his guidance and rely on his practical experience. But if you buy blues guitar lessons from the internet, or on a DVD, you are generally left to your own devices, relying on word of mouth from friends, or good old trial and error.

BEST ACOUSTIC GUITAR STRINGS FOR BLUES

First off, it depends on, what design of acoustic guitar to need to play. Blue grass musicians go for a medium gauge guitar string, which goes from 0.054 inch to 0.013 inch. These strings are great for clipping with a plectrum held loosely between thumb and finger, and don’t vibrate a lot when struck. This can be important if you’ve got a great guitar with a low action. A string that vibrates too much can touch one of the frets, causing a terrible buzzing sound. Additionally, they’re a bit tough on the fretting fingers.

Medium gauge guitar strings want a little more finger pressure to hold them firmly on the frets, although obviously, we need to build up those callouses. For blues style finger picking, most players prefer light gauge, which range from 0.054 to 0.011 inch.

There does not seem much difference between the two sets of strings, but believe me – you’ll feel it! The difference becomes clear when you try to bend one of the strings across to raise the note a semi tone and create that lovely wailing blues sound.

It feels extremely difficult – you only can not push it far enough, readily enough. By contrast, most people find extra light strings a bit too thin (0.052 to 0.010). Saying that, many superb world class guitarists use lights, as it all is dependent upon your finger management.

STRING QUALITY IS NOT An ISSUE WITH MODERN STRINGS AND PRODUCTION PROCEDURES.

Basic 80/20 bronze wound strings can be purchased quite cheaply, but it is worth while spending a little more and purchasing phosphor bronze, which are a lasting. longer bit more mellow and Martin make an SP set, which is stronger and great for that particular studio session, or performance that is important. But if you are a road player, don’t trouble with the quality that is higher – play the guitar hard and change them often.

I’m not much of a purist as far as guitar quality goes, but I do like to have great strings. Having analyzed many over the last 40 years or so, I always seem to come back to light gauge Martin strings, which are great for picking acoustic blues guitar.

When playing finger style with naked finger, I purchase phosphor bronze strings in the SP range and usually use two pair a month. For bottleneck I also use consistently SP and Medium gauge, same producer.
