Often it’s the little things that guitarists comprise that make all the difference. Many people have played with Candy Man by Gary Davis, with various amounts of success, for quite a while. I’ve played with this for years, and I decided to take a closer look to see what is happening.

Reverend Gary Davis
Needless to say, we understand that he used his thumb and just one finger for his right hand picking, but that is merely the start of his brilliance for blues music. Loosen up those fingers and let’s go … One Of The Last Great Blues Guitar Masters

The Best in Acoustic Blues From the Master

Reverend Gary Davis was not common in many regards. The sophistication and musical richness of his blues guitar music is legendary, and we could consider ourselves to be really blessed that his art remained undiminished in his later years. Unlike many blues guys, who ceased playing and restarted after they’d been ‘discovered’ again, Gary Davis never stopped playing guitar and many of his tunes in his can be found on Youtube.

GARY DAVIS – ROAD BLUES VOCALIST

It was still his custom to play the blues in the roads around Harlem until he became in vogue once again, then started to record and play live gigs once again. He was also very willing to give guitar lessons to nearly anyone that asked him to blues, it appears, and so the skills were passed on to young guitarists like Stephan Grossman and many others.

Oops, something went wrong.

Obviously, his finger could proceed rapidly and seemed to move independently from his thumb. He also used finger picks to play guitar, which helps to be more precise.

RAGTIME OR BLUES GUITAR, gOSPEL

He was quite skillful in any key, either major or minor, but it was not this fact that exemplified his guitar music (for me.) The timing of his thumb beats were rock solid, as you would anticipate, and to create lightning fast, or he could break out of the alternating bass pattern at will, either to double time and generate syncopated rhythms single string runs.

For the latter, he would pick on a string alternately with his thumb and finger, as though he were using a plectrum. This was remarkable enough, but he frequently sang at the exact same time which is some trick – try it sometime!

When needed, to finish a phrase or a run, giving the impression of other finger used his thumb would also jump across to the high strings.

Most guitar players have a kind of a running battle with their guitar strings, besides the normal issues relating to keeping them in tune and altering them. The questions are rife for the pupil guitarist. It is not satisfactory that we need to learn finger picking on guitar, but on top of that, our fingers damage and we are not certain if we’re using the right guitar strings or not!

What sort of strings are not bad for playing with acoustic blues guitar, for instance. If you are fortunate enough (and rich enough) to have a private teacher, then it’s a piece of cake. Merely ask his guidance and rely on his practical expertise.

The best strings for acoustic blues guitar are actually the ones that suit your style, which might change over time, but first of all it depends an awful lot in your touch and the effect you want to give with your music.

First off, it depends on, what design of acoustic guitar to want to play. Blue grass players go for a medium gauge guitar string, which goes from 0.054 inch to 0.013 inch. These strings are great for clipping with a plectrum held loosely between thumb and finger, and do not vibrate a lot when struck. This can be significant if you have a great guitar with a low action. A string that vibrates too much can touch one of the frets, causing a horrible buzzing sound. Also, they are a bit tough on the fretting fingers.

Of course, we need to build up those callouses, but medium gauge guitar strings desire a little more finger pressure to hold them strongly on the frets. For blues style finger picking, most players prefer light gauge, which range from 0.054 to 0.011 inch.

There doesn’t appear much difference between the two sets of strings, but believe me – you will feel it! The difference becomes apparent when you try to flex one of the strings across to increase the note a semi-tone and produce that wonderful wailing blues sound.

It feels really hard – you only can not push it far enough, readily enough. By contrast, most people locate additional light strings a bit too skinny (0.052 to 0.010). Saying that, many outstanding world class guitarists use lights, as it depends upon your finger control.

STRING QUALITY IS NOT An ISSUE WITH MODERN STRINGS AND PRODUCTION PROCESSES.

Fundamental 80/20 bronze wound strings can be purchased fairly cheaply, but it’s worth while spending a little more and purchasing phosphor bronze, which are a bit more mellow and longer lasting. Martin make an SP set, which is more durable and great for that special studio session, or important performance. But if you are a road player, don’t trouble with the quality that is higher – play with the guitar hard and change them regularly.

I’m not much of a purist as far as guitar quality goes, but I do like to have strings that are really good. Having tested many over the last 40 years or so, I always look to come back to light gauge Martin strings, which are great for picking on acoustic blues guitar.

When playing with fingerstyle with bare finger, I typically use two pair a month and buy phosphor bronze strings in the SP range. For bottleneck I also use consistently SP and Medium gauge, same manufacturer.
