Frequently it is the little matters that guitarists include that make all the difference. Many people have played with Candy Man by Gary Davis, for quite a while, with various amounts of success. I have played this for years, and then I decided to take a closer look to see what’s happening.

Reverend Gary Davis
Obviously, we understand that he used only one finger and his thumb for his right hand picking, but that is merely the start of his genius for blues music. Loosen up those fingers and let’s go … One Of The Last Great Blues Guitar Masters

The Best in Acoustic Blues From the Master

Reverend Gary Davis was not common in many regards. The complexity and musical fullness of his blues guitar music is celebrated, and we could consider ourselves to be very fortunate that his prowess remained undiminished in his later years. Unlike many blues guys, who ceased playing and restarted after they had been ‘discovered’ again, Gary Davis never ceased playing guitar and many of his tunes in his can be found on Youtube.

GARY DAVIS – ROAD BLUES VOCALIST

It was still his custom until he became in vogue once again, then began to record and play live gigs once again to play the blues in the roads around Harlem. He was also quite willing to give guitar lessons to practically anyone that asked him to blues, it appears, and so the skills were passed on to young guitarists including Stephan Grossman and many others.

Oops, something went wrong.

Of course, his finger could move fast and appeared to move separately from his thumb. He also used finger picks to play guitar, which helps to be more exact.

GOSPEL, RAGTIME OR BLUES GUITAR

He was very adept in any key, either major or minor, but it was not this fact that exemplified his guitar music (for me.) He could break out of the alternating bass pattern at will, either to, and the timing of his thumb beats were rock solid, as you would expect double time and create syncopated rhythms, or to create lightning fast single string runs.

For the latter, he’d pick a string alternately with finger and his thumb, as though he were using a plectrum. This was remarkable enough, but he frequently sang at precisely the same time which is some trick – try it sometime!

When needed, to complete a phrase or a run, giving the impression of other finger being used his thumb would also jump across to the high strings. The result was an unique experience of ragtime guitar playing which has never been equaled.

Most guitar players have a kind of a running battle with their guitar strings, apart from the regular issues relating to keeping them in tune and altering them. The questions are rife for the pupil guitarist. It is not satisfactory that we must learn finger picking guitar, but on top of that, our fingers damage and we are not sure if we’re using the right guitar strings or not!

What sort of strings are great for playing acoustic blues guitar, for example. Should you be lucky enough (and rich enough) to have a personal teacher, then it’s a piece of cake. Just ask his advice and rely on his practical experience.

To begin with, it depends on, what style of acoustic guitar to want to play. These strings are great for clipping with a plectrum held loosely between thumb and finger, and do not vibrate a lot when struck. This can be important if you have a great guitar with a low action. Also, they are a bit challenging on the fretting fingers.

ACOUSTIC BLUES GUITAR STRINGS –

Medium gauge guitar strings desire a little more finger pressure to hold them hard on the frets, although obviously, we need to build up those callouses. For blues style finger picking, most players prefer light gauge, which range from 0.054 to 0.011 inch.

There does not seem much difference between the two sets of strings, but believe me – you’ll feel it! The difference becomes clear when you attempt to bend one of the strings across to raise the note a semi tone and produce that wailing blues sound that is lovely.

It feels really challenging – you only can not push it far enough, readily enough. By comparison, most folks find additional light strings a bit too thin (0.052 to 0.010). Saying that, many outstanding world-class guitarists use lights, as it all depends upon your finger management.

STRING QUALITY ISN’T An ISSUE WITH MODERN STRINGS AND PRODUCTION METHODS.

Fundamental 80/20 bronze wound strings can be bought quite cheaply, but it’s worth while spending a little more and buying phosphor bronze, which are a lasting. longer bit more mellow and Martin make performance that is important, or an SP set, which is more durable and excellent for that particular studio session. But in case you are a street player, don’t trouble with the higher quality – change them often and play the guitar hard.

I am not much of a purist as far as guitar quality goes, but I do enjoy to have strings that are great. Having tested many over the last 40 years or so, I look to come back to light gauge Martin strings, which are great for picking acoustic blues guitar.

When playing with finger-style with bare finger, I generally use two pair a month and buy phosphor bronze strings in the SP range. For bottleneck I also use Medium gauge, same producer and always SP.
