Frequently it is the small things that guitarists comprise that make all the difference. Many of us have played with Candy Man by Gary Davis, with various degrees of success, for quite a while. I have played this for years, and I determined to take a closer look to see what is happening.

Gospel and Ragtime Blues Guitar Lessons – Reverend Gary Davis
Naturally, we know that he used only one finger and his thumb for his right hand picking, but that is merely the beginning of his genius for blues music. Loosen up those fingers and let’s go … One Of The Last Great Blues Guitar Masters

The Best in Acoustic Blues From the Master

Reverend Gary Davis was not common in many respects. The intricacy and musical fullness of his blues guitar music is legendary, and we could consider ourselves to be very lucky that his prowess remained undiminished in his later years. Unlike many blues guys, who stopped playing and restarted after they had been ‘discovered’ again, Gary Davis never stopped playing guitar and many of his tunes in his can be located on Youtube.

GARY DAVIS – ROAD BLUES VOCALIST

It was still his custom until he became in vogue once again, then started to record and play live gigs once again to play the blues in the roads around Harlem. He was also quite willing to give blues guitar lessons to practically anyone that asked him, it appears, and thus the skills were passed on to young guitarists including many others and Stephan Grossman.

Oops, something went wrong.

Firstly, Davis used the thumb and index finger of his right hand to fingerpick all of those sounds that were very intricate. Of course, his finger appeared to move separately from his thumb and could proceed rapidly. He additionally used finger picks to play guitar, which helps to be more exact.

GOSPEL, RAGTIME OR BLUES GUITAR

He was very proficient in any key, either major or minor, but it was not this fact that exemplified his guitar music (for me.)

For the latter, he would pick a string alternately with finger and his thumb, as though he were using a plectrum. This was impressive enough, but he often sang at exactly the same time which is some trick – try it!

His thumb would also jump across to the high strings when needed, to complete a run or a phrase, giving the impression of other finger being used.

Most guitar players have a kind of a running battle with their guitar strings, aside from the regular issues relating to keeping them in tune and changing them. The questions are rife for the pupil guitarist. It’s not satisfactory that we have to learn finger picking guitar, but on top of that, our fingers damage and we are not certain if we are using the right guitar strings or not!

What type of strings are not bad for playing with acoustic blues guitar, for instance. Should you be fortunate enough (and rich enough) to have a personal teacher, then it is a piece of cake. Merely ask his advice and rely on his practical expertise. However, if you buy blues guitar lessons from the net, or on a DVD, you’re mostly left to your own devices, relying on word of mouth from friends, or good old trial and error.

To start, it depends on, what design of acoustic guitar to need to play. These strings are great for clipping with a plectrum held loosely between thumb and finger, and do not vibrate a lot when struck. This can be significant if you’ve got a great guitar with a low action. Also, they are a bit difficult on the fretting fingers.

Obviously, we must build up those callouses, but medium gauge guitar strings want a little more finger pressure to hold them strongly on the frets.

There doesn’t seem much difference between the two sets of strings, but believe me – you’ll feel it! The difference becomes obvious when you attempt to flex one of the strings across to increase the note a semi-tone and produce that wailing blues sound that is wonderful.

It feels extremely hard – you just can’t shove it far enough, readily enough. By comparison, most folks locate extra light strings a bit too skinny (0.052 to 0.010). Saying that, many superb world class guitarists use lights, as it depends on your finger management.

STRING QUALITY IS NOT An ISSUE WITH PRODUCTION PROCESSES AND MODERN STRINGS.

Basic 80/20 bronze wound strings can be purchased fairly cheaply, but it’s worth while spending a little more and buying phosphor bronze, which are a lasting. longer bit more mellow and Martin make significant performance, or an SP set, which is stronger and great for that particular studio session. However, if you are a road player, don’t trouble with the higher quality – play the guitar hard and change them often.

I’m not much of a purist as far as guitar quality goes, but I do like to have strings that are really good. Having examined many over the last 40 years or so, I look to come back to light gauge Martin strings, which are excellent for picking acoustic blues guitar.

When playing with finger style with naked finger, I generally use two pair a month and purchase phosphor bronze strings in the SP range. For bottleneck I additionally use Medium gauge, same manufacturer and consistently SP.
