Frequently it’s the small matters that guitarists contain that make all the difference. Many people have played with Candy Man by Gary Davis, for quite a long time, with various amounts of success. I have played this for years, and then I determined to take a closer look to see what is happening.

Gospel and Ragtime Blues Guitar Lessons – Reverend Gary Davis
Obviously, we understand that he used his thumb and only one finger for his right hand picking, but that is merely the start of his brilliance for blues music. Loosen up those fingers and let us go … Among The Last Great Blues Guitar Masters

The Very Best in Acoustic Blues From the Master

Reverend Gary Davis was uncommon in many regards. The sophistication and musical fullness of his blues guitar music is legendary, and we could consider ourselves to be really lucky that his art remained undiminished in his later years. Unlike many blues men, who ceased playing and restarted after they had been ‘discovered’ again, Gary Davis never ceased playing guitar and many of his songs in his can be located on Youtube.

GARY DAVIS – STREET BLUES VOCALIST

It was still his custom until he became in vogue once again, then started to record and play live shows once again to play the blues in the roads around Harlem. He was also very willing to give blues guitar lessons to practically anyone that asked him, it seems, and so the skills were passed on to young guitarists such as Stephan Grossman and many others.

Oops, something went wrong.

Needless to say, his finger seemed to move independently from his thumb and could proceed rapidly. He additionally used finger picks to play guitar, which helps to be more accurate.

RAGTIME OR BLUES GUITAR, gOSPEL

He was quite expert in any key, either major or minor, but it was not this fact that exemplified his guitar music (for me.)

For the latter, he would pick on a string alternately with his thumb and finger, as though he were using a plectrum. This was remarkable enough, but he frequently sang at precisely the same time which is some trick – try it sometime!

His thumb would also jump across to the high strings when needed, to finish a phrase or a run, giving the impression of other finger being used. The result was an unique encounter of ragtime guitar playing which has never been equaled.

Most guitar players have a sort of a running battle with their guitar strings, besides the regular issues relating to changing them and keeping them in tune. The questions are rife for the pupil guitarist. It is not satisfactory that we need to learn finger picking on guitar, but on top of that, our fingers damage and we aren’t certain if we are using the right guitar strings or not!

What sort of strings are not bad for playing with acoustic blues guitar, for instance. If you’re lucky enough (and rich enough) to have a private teacher, then it is a piece of cake. Just ask his guidance and rely on his practical experience.

The best strings for acoustic blues guitar are actually the ones that suit your design, which might change over time, but first of all it depends an awful lot in your touch and the effect you need to give with your music.

To begin with, it depends on, what design of acoustic guitar to desire to play. These strings are great for clipping with a plectrum held loosely between thumb and finger, and don’t vibrate a lot when hit. This can be important if you have a great guitar with a low action. A string that vibrates too much can touch one of the frets, causing a terrible buzzing sound. Additionally, they’re a bit hard on the fretting fingers.

ACOUSTIC BLUES GUITAR STRINGS – MEDIUM GUITAR OR LIGHT GAUGE FOR FINGER STYLE?

Medium gauge guitar strings desire a little more finger pressure to hold them strongly on the frets, although of course, we need to build up those callouses. For blues style finger picking, most players prefer light gauge, which range from 0.054 to 0.011 inch.

There doesn’t seem much difference between the two sets of strings, but believe me – you’ll feel it! The difference becomes obvious when you attempt to turn one of the strings across to increase the note a semitone and produce that wonderful wailing blues sound.

It feels really challenging – you just can’t shove it far enough, readily enough. By contrast, most people find additional light strings a bit too skinny (0.052 to 0.010). Saying that, many superb world class guitarists use lights, as it is dependent upon your finger management.

STRING QUALITY IS NOT An ISSUE WITH MANUFACTURING PROCEDURES AND MODERN STRINGS.

Fundamental 80/20 bronze wound strings can be purchased fairly cheaply, but it’s worth while phosphor bronze, which are a lasting. longer bit more mellow and purchasing spending a little more and Martin make significant performance, or an SP set, which is stronger and great for that particular studio session. However, if you are a street player, do not trouble with the higher quality – play with the guitar hard and change them frequently.

I’m not much of a purist as far as guitar quality goes, but I do enjoy to have really good strings. Having analyzed many over the last 40 years or so, I seem to come back to light gauge Martin strings, which are excellent for picking on acoustic blues guitar.

When playing with fingerstyle with naked finger, I purchase phosphor bronze strings in the SP range and normally use two pair a month. For bottleneck I also use consistently SP and Medium gauge, same manufacturer.
