Frequently it is the small things that guitarists contain that make all the difference. Many of us have played Candy Man by Gary Davis, for a long time, with various amounts of success. I have played this for years, and I decided to take a closer look to see what’s happening.

Gospel and Ragtime Blues Guitar Lessons – Reverend Gary Davis
Needless to say, we know he used his thumb and just one finger for his right hand picking, but that’s just the beginning of his genius for blues music. Loosen up those fingers and let us go … Among The Last Great Blues Guitar Masters

The Very Best in Acoustic Blues From the Master

Reverend Gary Davis was unusual in many regards. The complexity and musical fullness of his blues guitar music is legendary, and we could consider ourselves to be very lucky that his art remained undiminished in his later years. Unlike many blues men, who quit playing and restarted after they’d been ‘discovered’ again, Gary Davis never stopped playing guitar and many of his songs in his can be found on Youtube.

GARY DAVIS – ROAD BLUES VOCALIST

It was still his custom to play the blues in the streets around Harlem until he became in vogue once again, then began to record and play live shows once again. He was also quite willing to give blues guitar lessons to nearly anyone that asked him, it appears, and so the skills were passed on to young guitarists like many others and Stephan Grossman.

Oops, something went wrong.

Firstly, Davis used the thumb and index finger of his right hand to fingerpick all of those sounds that were unbelievably intricate. Naturally, his finger appeared to move separately from his thumb and could proceed fast. He also used finger picks to play guitar, which helps to be more exact.

RAGTIME OR BLUES GUITAR, gOSPEL

For the latter, he’d pick a string alternately with his thumb and finger, as though he were using a plectrum. This was remarkable enough, but he often sang at precisely the same time which is some trick – try it!

When needed, to finish a run or a phrase, giving the impression of other finger used his thumb would additionally leap across to the high strings.

Most guitar players have a kind of a running battle with their guitar strings, apart from the regular issues relating to keeping them in tune and changing them. The questions are rife for the pupil guitarist. It’s not sufficient that we need to learn finger picking on guitar, but on top of that, our fingers damage and we aren’t certain if we’re using the right guitar strings or not!

What sort of strings are good for playing with acoustic blues guitar, for example. If you are lucky enough (and rich enough) to have a personal teacher, then it is a piece of cake. Only ask his guidance and rely on his practical experience. However, if you purchase blues guitar lessons from the internet, or on a DVD, you are mostly left to your own devices, relying on word of mouth from friends, or good old trial and error.

BEST ACOUSTIC GUITAR STRINGS FOR BLUES

To begin with, it depends on, what style of acoustic guitar to desire to play. Blue grass players go for a medium gauge guitar string, which goes from 0.054 inch to 0.013 inch. This can be significant if you’ve got a great guitar with a low action. A string that vibrates too much can touch one of the frets, causing a horrible buzzing sound. Also, they are a bit hard on the fretting fingers.

ACOUSTIC BLUES GUITAR STRINGS – MEDIUM GUITAR OR LIGHT GAUGE FOR FINGER STYLE?

Medium gauge guitar strings need a little more finger pressure to hold them strongly on the frets, although obviously, we must build up those callouses.

There doesn’t appear much difference between the two sets of strings, but believe me – you’ll feel it! The difference becomes apparent when you attempt to bend one of the strings across to increase the note a semi-tone and produce that wailing blues sound that is lovely.

It feels really challenging – you only can’t shove it far enough, readily enough. By comparison, most folks find additional light strings a bit too lean (0.052 to 0.010). Saying that, many exceptional world-class guitarists use lights, as it all depends upon your finger management.

STRING QUALITY IS NOT An ISSUE WITH MODERN STRINGS AND MANUFACTURING METHODS.

Fundamental 80/20 bronze wound strings can be bought fairly cheaply, but it’s worth while spending a little more and purchasing phosphor bronze, which are a bit more mellow and longer lasting. Martin make performance that is significant, or an SP set, which is stronger and excellent for that particular studio session. But if you’re a road player, do not bother with the higher quality – change them often and play with the guitar hard.

I’m not much of a purist as far as guitar quality goes, but I do enjoy to have great strings. Having tested many over the last 40 years or so, I always seem to come back to light gauge Martin strings, which are excellent for picking on acoustic blues guitar.

When playing fingerstyle with naked finger, I buy phosphor bronze strings in the SP range and normally use two pair a month. For bottleneck I also use always SP and Medium gauge, same manufacturer.
