Frequently it is the small things that guitarists include that make all the difference. Many people have played with Candy Man by Gary Davis, for quite a long time, with various amounts of success. I’ve played this for years, and then I decided to take a closer look to see what’s going on.

Reverend Gary Davis
Needless to say, we understand he used his thumb and just one finger for his right hand picking, but that is just the start of his brilliance for blues music. Loosen up those fingers and let’s go … Among The Last Great Blues Guitar Masters

The Very Best in Acoustic Blues From the Master

Reverend Gary Davis was uncommon in many regards. The sophistication and musical fullness of his blues guitar music is celebrated, and we could consider ourselves to be very lucky that his prowess remained undiminished in his later years. Unlike many blues men, who stopped playing and restarted after they’d been ‘discovered’ again, Gary Davis never ceased playing guitar and many of his songs in his can be located on Youtube.

GARY DAVIS – ROAD BLUES SINGER

It was still his custom to play the blues in the roads around Harlem once again, then started to record and play live gigs once again until he became in vogue. He was also quite willing to give blues guitar lessons to almost anyone that asked him, it appears, and thus the skills were passed on to young guitarists including many others and Stephan Grossman.

Oops, something went wrong.

Firstly, Davis used the thumb and index finger of his right hand to fingerpick all of those sounds that were incredibly intricate. Of course, his finger seemed to move independently from his thumb and could move fast. He also used finger picks to play guitar, which helps to be more precise.

RAGTIME OR BLUES GUITAR, gOSPEL

He was quite expert in any key, either major or minor, but it was not this fact that exemplified his guitar music (for me.) He could break out of the alternating bass pattern at will, either to, and the timing of his thumb beats were rock solid, as you would expect double time and produce syncopated rhythms, or to produce lightning fast single string runs.

For the latter, he’d pick on a string alternately with his thumb and finger, as though he were using a plectrum. This was impressive enough, but he often sang at the exact same time which is some trick – try it!

When needed, to complete a run or a phrase, giving the impression of other finger used his thumb would also leap across to the high strings. The result was an unique encounter of ragtime guitar playing which has never been equaled.

Most guitar players have a kind of a running battle with their guitar strings, besides the ordinary issues relating to keeping them in tune and altering them. The questions are rife for the pupil guitarist. It is not satisfactory that we have to learn finger picking on guitar, but on top of that, our fingers damage and we are not certain if we’re using the right guitar strings or not!

What sort of strings are great for playing acoustic blues guitar, for example. In case you are lucky enough (and rich enough) to have a private teacher, then it is a piece of cake. Only ask his advice and rely on his practical expertise. However, if you purchase blues guitar lessons from the web, or on a DVD, you’re generally left to your own devices, relying on word of mouth from friends, or good old trial and error.

To begin with, it depends on, what style of acoustic guitar to want to play. This can be significant if you’ve got a great guitar with a low action. Also, they’re a bit challenging on the fretting fingers.

ACOUSTIC GUITAR BLUES GUITAR STRINGS – MEDIUM GUITAR OR LIGHT GAUGE FOR FINGER STYLE?

Obviously, we have to build up those callouses, but medium gauge guitar strings want a little more finger pressure to hold them strongly on the frets.

There does not seem much difference between the two sets of strings, but believe me – you will feel it! The difference becomes clear when you attempt to turn one of the strings across to increase the note a semi-tone and produce that wonderful wailing blues sound.

It feels really challenging – you just can not shove it far enough, readily enough. By comparison, most individuals find extra light strings a bit too skinny (0.052 to 0.010). Saying that, many brilliant world class guitarists use lights, as it depends on your finger control.

STRING QUALITY ISN’T An ISSUE WITH PRODUCTION PROCESSES AND MODERN STRINGS.

Fundamental 80/20 bronze wound strings can be bought fairly cheaply, but it is worth while phosphor bronze, which are a lasting. longer bit more mellow and purchasing spending a little more and Martin make performance that is significant, or an SP set, which is stronger and great for that special studio session. However, if you’re a street player, don’t bother with the higher quality – play with the guitar hard and change them often.

I am not much of a purist as far as guitar quality goes, but I do like to have great strings. Having examined many over the last 40 years or so, I seem to come back to light gauge Martin strings, which are excellent for picking on acoustic blues guitar.

When playing fingerstyle with naked finger, I generally use two pair a month and buy phosphor bronze strings in the SP range. For bottleneck I additionally use consistently SP and Medium gauge, same producer.
