Frequently it’s the little things that guitarists comprise that make all the difference. Many of us have played with Candy Man by Gary Davis, with various degrees of success, for quite a while. I’ve played this for years, and I decided to take a closer look to see what’s happening.

Gospel and Ragtime Blues Guitar Lessons – Reverend Gary Davis
Needless to say, we know that he used his thumb and only one finger for his right hand picking, but that’s merely the start of his genius for blues music. Loosen up those fingers and let’s go … One Of The Last Great Blues Guitar Masters

The Best in Acoustic Blues From the Master

Reverend Gary Davis was not common in many respects. The intricacy and musical fullness of his blues guitar music is celebrated, and we could consider ourselves to be very blessed that his prowess remained undiminished in his later years. Unlike many blues guys, who stopped playing and restarted after they’d been ‘discovered’ again, Gary Davis never stopped playing guitar and many of his tunes in his can be found on Youtube.

GARY DAVIS – STREET BLUES SINGER

It was still his habit to play the blues in the roads around Harlem once again, then started to record and play live shows once again until he became in vogue. He was also very willing to give blues guitar lessons to almost anyone that asked him, it appears, and so the skills were passed on to young guitarists including many others and Stephan Grossman.

Oops, something went wrong.

First of all, Davis used the thumb and index finger of his right hand to fingerpick all of those unbelievably intricate sounds. Needless to say, his finger appeared to move separately from his thumb and could go fast. He additionally used finger picks to play guitar, which helps to be more precise.

RAGTIME OR BLUES GUITAR, gOSPEL

He was quite proficient in any key, either major or minor, but it wasn’t this fact that exemplified his guitar music (for me.) He could break out of the alternating bass pattern at will, either to, and the timing of his thumb beats were rock solid, as you’d expect double time and produce syncopated rhythms, or to create lightning single string runs.

For the latter, he would pick on a string alternately with his thumb and finger, as though he were using a plectrum. This was notable enough, but he often sang at precisely the same time which is some trick – try it!

His thumb would also jump across to the high strings when needed, to complete a run or a phrase, giving the impression of other finger being used.

Most guitar players have a sort of a running battle with their guitar strings, besides the normal issues relating to keeping them in tune and changing them. The questions are rife for the student guitarist. It’s not satisfactory that we need to learn finger picking on guitar, but on top of that, our fingers hurt and we are not certain if we’re using the right guitar strings or not!

What type of strings are not bad for playing with acoustic blues guitar, for example. In case you are fortunate enough (and rich enough) to have a personal teacher, then it’s a piece of cake. Merely ask his advice and rely on his practical expertise. But if you purchase blues guitar lessons from the net, or on a DVD, you’re generally left to your own devices, relying on word of mouth from friends, or good old trial and error.

The best strings for acoustic blues guitar are actually the ones that suit your style, which might change over time, but first of all it depends an awful lot in your touch and the effect you want to give with your music.

BEST ACOUSTIC GUITAR STRINGS FOR BLUES

First off, it depends on, what design of acoustic guitar to want to play. These strings are great for clipping with a plectrum held loosely between thumb and finger, and do not vibrate a lot when struck. This can be significant if you’ve got a great guitar with a low action. Additionally, they are a bit tough on the fretting fingers.

ACOUSTIC BLUES GUITAR STRINGS – MEDIUM GUITAR OR LIGHT GAUGE FOR FINGER STYLE?

Medium gauge guitar strings desire a little more finger pressure to hold them strongly on the frets, although obviously, we have to build up those callouses.

There does not seem much difference between the two sets of strings, but believe me – you will feel it! The difference becomes clear when you attempt to turn one of the strings across to raise the note a semi tone and produce that lovely wailing blues sound.

It feels extremely hard – you simply can not shove it far enough, readily enough. By contrast, most people find extra light strings a bit too lean (0.052 to 0.010). Saying that, many brilliant world class guitarists use lights, as it all depends on your finger control.

STRING QUALITY IS NOT An ISSUE WITH MODERN STRINGS AND MANUFACTURING PROCEDURES.

Basic 80/20 bronze wound strings can be purchased fairly cheaply, but it is worth while spending a little more and purchasing phosphor bronze, which are a bit more mellow and longer lasting. Martin make performance that is significant, or an SP set, which is stronger and great for that particular studio session. However, if you are a road player, do not bother with the quality that is higher – play with the guitar hard and change them frequently.

I’m not much of a purist as far as guitar quality goes, but I do like to have strings that are really good. Having analyzed many over the last 40 years or so, I look to come back to light gauge Martin strings, which are great for picking on acoustic blues guitar.

When playing finger style with bare finger, I normally use two pair a month and purchase phosphor bronze strings in the SP range. For bottleneck I additionally use Medium gauge, same manufacturer and always SP.
