Often it’s the little matters that guitarists contain that make all the difference. Many of us have played with Candy Man by Gary Davis, with various degrees of success, for a long time. I’ve played with this for years, and then I determined to take a closer look to see what is happening.

Reverend Gary Davis
Obviously, we know he used only one finger and his thumb for his right hand picking, but that is merely the beginning of his brilliance for blues music. Loosen up those fingers and let’s go … One Of The Last Great Blues Guitar Masters

The Very Best in Acoustic Blues From the Master

Reverend Gary Davis was not common in many regards. The sophistication and musical richness of his blues guitar music is legendary, and we could consider ourselves to be quite fortunate that his art remained undiminished in his later years. Unlike many blues men, who ceased playing and restarted after they had been ‘discovered’ again, Gary Davis never quit playing guitar and many of his songs in his can be located on Youtube.

GARY DAVIS – ROAD BLUES VOCALIST

It was still his habit until he became in vogue once again, then started to record and play live shows once again to play the blues in the roads around Harlem. He was also quite willing to give blues guitar lessons to nearly anyone that asked him, it seems, and so the skills were passed on to young guitarists including Stephan Grossman and many others.

Oops, something went wrong.

Firstly, Davis used the thumb and index finger of his right hand to fingerpick all of those sounds that were amazingly intricate. Naturally, his finger seemed to move independently from his thumb and could proceed fast. He also used finger picks to play guitar, which helps to be more accurate.

RAGTIME OR BLUES GUITAR, gOSPEL

He was quite proficient in any key, either major or minor, but it was not this fact that exemplified his guitar music (for me.) The timing of his thumb beats were rock solid, as you would anticipate, and he could break out of the alternating bass pattern at will, either to double time and produce syncopated rhythms, or to create lightning single string runs.

For the latter, he’d pick a string alternately with his thumb and finger, as though he were using a plectrum. This was impressive enough, but he frequently sang at the exact same time which is some trick – try it sometime!

When needed, to complete a run or a phrase, giving the impression of other finger being used his thumb would additionally jump across to the high strings. The result was an unique encounter of ragtime guitar playing which has never been equaled.

Most guitar players have a kind of a running battle with their guitar strings, apart from the normal issues relating to keeping them in tune and altering them. The questions are rife for the student guitarist. It’s not sufficient that we need to learn finger picking guitar, but on top of that, our fingers hurt and we aren’t certain if we’re using the guitar strings that are right or not!

What sort of strings are not bad for playing acoustic blues guitar, for example. If you are lucky enough (and rich enough) to have a personal teacher, then it is a piece of cake. Merely ask his guidance and rely on his practical expertise.

The best strings for acoustic blues guitar are really the ones that suit your design, which might change over time, but first of all it depends an awful lot on your touch and the effect you need to give with your music.

To start, it depends on, what design of acoustic guitar to need to play. This can be significant if you have a great guitar with a low action. A string that vibrates too much can touch one of the frets, causing a horrible buzzing sound. Also, they are a bit tough on the fretting fingers.

Of course, we need to build up those callouses, but medium gauge guitar strings need a little more finger pressure to hold them firmly on the frets. For blues style finger picking, most players prefer light gauge, which range from 0.054 to 0.011 inch.

There does not appear much difference between the two sets of strings, but believe me – you’ll feel it! The difference becomes apparent when you attempt to bend one of the strings across to raise the note a semitone and create that wailing blues sound that is wonderful.

It feels really challenging – you only can not shove it far enough, readily enough. By contrast, most people locate additional light strings a bit too lean (0.052 to 0.010). Saying that, many superb world-class guitarists use lights, as it all depends upon your finger management.

STRING QUALITY ISN’T An ISSUE WITH MODERN STRINGS AND PRODUCTION METHODS.

Basic 80/20 bronze wound strings can be bought quite cheaply, but it is worth while spending a little more and purchasing phosphor bronze, which are a bit more mellow and longer lasting. Martin make performance that is significant, or an SP set, which is more durable and great for that particular studio session. But if you’re a road player, don’t trouble with the quality that is higher – play the guitar hard and change them often.

I am not much of a purist as far as guitar quality goes, but I do enjoy to have great strings. Having tested many over the last 40 years or so, I always look to come back to light gauge Martin strings, which are great for picking acoustic blues guitar.

When playing fingerstyle with bare finger, I generally use two pair a month and buy phosphor bronze strings in the SP range. For bottleneck I also use constantly SP and Medium gauge, same producer.
