Often it is the small matters that guitarists contain that make all the difference. Many of us have played with Candy Man by Gary Davis, with various amounts of success, for quite a long time. I have played with this for years, and then I determined to take a closer look to see what is happening.

Reverend Gary Davis
Naturally, we understand he used only one finger and his thumb for his right hand picking, but that is only the start of his genius for blues music. Loosen up those fingers and let’s go … Among The Last Great Blues Guitar Masters

The Very Best in Acoustic Blues From the Master

Reverend Gary Davis was uncommon in many respects. The complexity and musical richness of his blues guitar music is legendary, and we could consider ourselves to be really fortunate that his prowess remained undiminished in his later years. Unlike many blues guys, who ceased playing and restarted after they had been ‘discovered’ again, Gary Davis never stopped playing guitar and many of his songs in his can be found on Youtube.

It was still his custom until he became in vogue once again, then started to record and play live gigs once again to play the blues in the streets around Harlem. He was also very willing to give guitar lessons to nearly anyone that asked him to blues, it seems, and so the skills were passed on to young guitarists such as many others and Stephan Grossman.

Oops, something went wrong.

To start with, Davis used the thumb and index finger of his right hand to fingerpick all of those sounds that were amazingly complex. Of course, his finger seemed to move independently from his thumb and could proceed quickly. He also used finger picks to play guitar, which helps to be more precise.

GOSPEL, RAGTIME OR BLUES GUITAR

He was quite proficient in any key, either major or minor, but it was not this fact that exemplified his guitar music (for me.)

For the latter, he would pick a string alternately with his thumb and finger, as though he were using a plectrum. This was remarkable enough, but he often sang at the exact same time which is some trick – try it sometime!

His thumb would additionally jump across to the high strings when needed, to complete a phrase or a run, giving the impression of other finger used. The result was an unique experience of ragtime guitar playing which has never been equaled.

Most guitar players have a kind of a running battle with their guitar strings, apart from the regular issues relating to changing them and keeping them in tune. The questions are rife for the student guitarist. It is not sufficient that we must learn finger picking on guitar, but on top of that, our fingers hurt and we are not sure if we’re using the right guitar strings or not!

What type of strings are not bad for playing acoustic blues guitar, for instance. If you are lucky enough (and rich enough) to have a private teacher, then it’s a piece of cake. Only ask his advice and rely on his practical expertise. However, if you buy blues guitar lessons from the internet, or on a DVD, you’re usually left to your own devices, relying on word of mouth from friends, or good old trial and error.

The best strings for acoustic blues guitar are really the ones that suit your style, which might change over time, but first of all it depends an awful lot on your touch and the effect you want to give with your music.

To begin with, it depends on, what design of acoustic guitar to want to play. Blue grass players go for a medium gauge guitar string, which goes from 0.054 inch to 0.013 inch. This can be significant if you have a great guitar with a low action. A string that vibrates too much can touch one of the frets, causing a terrible buzzing sound. Additionally, they are a bit hard on the fretting fingers.

Medium gauge guitar strings want a little more finger pressure to hold them firmly on the frets, although of course, we have to build up those callouses.

There doesn’t seem much difference between the two sets of strings, but believe me – you will feel it! The difference becomes obvious when you attempt to flex one of the strings across to increase the note a semi-tone and create that wailing blues sound that is wonderful.

It feels really challenging – you simply can’t push it far enough, readily enough. By comparison, most folks find extra light strings a bit too thin (0.052 to 0.010). Saying that, many superb world class guitarists use lights, as it all depends on your finger control.

STRING QUALITY IS NOT An ISSUE WITH MODERN STRINGS AND PRODUCTION PROCESSES.

Fundamental 80/20 bronze wound strings can be purchased quite cheaply, but it is worth while spending a little more and purchasing phosphor bronze, which are a bit more mellow and longer lasting. Martin make an SP set, which is stronger and great for that particular studio session, or important performance. However, if you are a street player, don’t bother with the quality that is higher – change them frequently and play with the guitar hard.

I’m not much of a purist as far as guitar quality goes, but I do like to have great strings. Having examined many over the last 40 years or so, I look to come back to light gauge Martin strings, which are excellent for picking on acoustic blues guitar.

When playing with fingerstyle with bare finger, I purchase phosphor bronze strings in the SP range and usually use two pair a month. For bottleneck I also use Medium gauge, same maker and always SP.
