Frequently it is the little matters that guitarists include that make all the difference. Many of us have played Candy Man by Gary Davis, for quite a long time, with various degrees of success. I have played with this for years, and I decided to take a closer look to see what’s going on.
Reverend Gary Davis
Needless to say, we understand that he used only one finger and his thumb for his right hand picking, but that is only the start of his brilliance for blues music. Loosen up those fingers and let’s go … Among The Last Great Blues Guitar Masters
The Very Best in Acoustic Blues From the Master
Reverend Gary Davis was not common in many regards. The sophistication and musical fullness of his blues guitar music is celebrated, and we could consider ourselves to be very fortunate that his prowess remained undiminished in his later years. Unlike many blues guys, who quit playing and restarted after they’d been ‘discovered’ again, Gary Davis never ceased playing guitar and many of his songs in his can be found on Youtube.
GARY DAVIS – STREET BLUES VOCALIST
It was still his custom to play the blues in the streets around Harlem until he became in vogue once again, then started to record and play live gigs once again. He was also quite willing to give guitar lessons to nearly anyone that asked him to blues, it seems, and so the skills were passed on to young guitarists including many others and Stephan Grossman.

First of all, Davis used the thumb and index finger of his right hand to fingerpick all of those sounds that were incredibly complicated. Of course, his finger could go quickly and seemed to move separately from his thumb. He also used finger picks to play guitar, which helps to be more precise.
GOSPEL, RAGTIME OR BLUES GUITAR
He was quite expert in any key, either major or minor, but it wasn’t this fact that exemplified his guitar music (for me.) The timing of his thumb beats were rock solid, as you’d expect, and to create lightning fast, or he could break out of the alternating bass pattern at will, either to double time and create syncopated rhythms single string runs.
For the latter, he’d pick on a string alternately with his thumb and finger, as though he were using a plectrum. This was notable enough, but he often sang at exactly the same time which is some trick – try it sometime!
When needed, to finish a phrase or a run, giving the impression of other finger being used his thumb would also jump across to the high strings. The result was an unique experience of ragtime guitar playing which has never been equaled.

Most guitar players have a kind of a running battle with their guitar strings, aside from the normal issues relating to keeping them in tune and changing them. The questions are rife for the student guitarist. It’s not satisfactory that we must learn finger picking guitar, but on top of that, our fingers hurt and we are not sure if we are using the guitar strings that are right or not!
What sort of strings are not bad for playing acoustic blues guitar, by way of example. If you are lucky enough (and rich enough) to have a personal teacher, then it’s a piece of cake. Just ask his guidance and rely on his practical expertise. However, if you buy blues guitar lessons from the internet, or on a DVD, you’re mostly left to your own devices, relying on word of mouth from friends, or good old trial and error.
To start, it depends on, what style of acoustic guitar to want to play. This can be important if you’ve got a great guitar with a low action. A string that vibrates too much can touch one of the frets, causing a terrible buzzing sound. Also, they’re a bit hard on the fretting fingers.

Obviously, we must build up those callouses, but medium gauge guitar strings need a little more finger pressure to hold them hard on the frets.
There doesn’t seem much difference between the two sets of strings, but believe me – you’ll feel it! The difference becomes apparent when you attempt to bend one of the strings across to increase the note a semi tone and create that wailing blues sound that is wonderful.
It feels really hard – you just can not shove it far enough, readily enough. By contrast, most people find additional light strings a bit too skinny (0.052 to 0.010). Saying that, many exceptional world class guitarists use lights, as it all depends on your finger control.
STRING QUALITY ISN’T An ISSUE WITH MANUFACTURING PROCEDURES AND MODERN STRINGS.
Fundamental 80/20 bronze wound strings can be purchased quite cheaply, but it’s worth while phosphor bronze, which are a lasting. longer bit more mellow and purchasing spending a little more and Martin make performance that is significant, or an SP set, which is more durable and great for that particular studio session. But if you’re a street player, do not bother with the quality that is higher – change them often and play with the guitar hard.
I am not much of a purist as far as guitar quality goes, but I do enjoy to have strings that are really good. Having examined many over the last 40 years or so, I always seem to come back to light gauge Martin strings, which are excellent for picking on acoustic blues guitar.
When playing finger style with bare finger, I usually use two pair a month and purchase phosphor bronze strings in the SP range. For bottleneck I additionally use always SP and Medium gauge, same producer.
