Frequently it is the little matters that guitarists include that make all the difference. Many people have played with Candy Man by Gary Davis, with various levels of success, for a long time. I’ve played this for years, and I decided to take a closer look to see what is going on.

Reverend Gary Davis
Of course, we understand he used his thumb and only one finger for his right hand picking, but that is only the start of his brilliance for blues music. Loosen up those fingers and let us go … Among The Last Great Blues Guitar Masters

The Very Best in Acoustic Blues From the Master

Reverend Gary Davis was not common in many respects. The intricacy and musical fullness of his blues guitar music is legendary, and we could consider ourselves to be quite fortunate that his prowess remained undiminished in his later years. Unlike many blues men, who stopped playing and restarted after they’d been ‘discovered’ again, Gary Davis never ceased playing guitar and many of his songs in his can be found on Youtube.

It was still his custom until he became in vogue once again, then began to record and play live gigs once again to play the blues in the streets around Harlem. He was also very willing to give guitar lessons to almost anyone that asked him to blues, it seems, and thus the skills were passed on to young guitarists like Stephan Grossman and many others.

Oops, something went wrong.

Needless to say, his finger appeared to move independently from his thumb and could proceed quickly. He also used finger picks to play guitar, which helps to be more precise.

GOSPEL, RAGTIME OR BLUES GUITAR

He was very proficient in any key, either major or minor, but it wasn’t this fact that exemplified his guitar music (for me.)

For the latter, he’d pick on a string alternately with his thumb and finger, as though he were using a plectrum. This was remarkable enough, but he frequently sang at the same time which is some trick – try it!

When needed, to finish a run or a phrase, giving the impression of other finger used his thumb would also leap across to the high strings. The result was an unique encounter of ragtime guitar playing which has never been equaled.

Most guitar players have a kind of a running battle with their guitar strings, aside from the regular issues relating to keeping them in tune and altering them. The questions are rife for the student guitarist. It’s not sufficient that we have to learn finger picking on guitar, but on top of that, our fingers damage and we aren’t sure if we are using the right guitar strings or not!

What kind of strings are great for playing acoustic blues guitar, for instance. Should you be fortunate enough (and rich enough) to have a personal teacher, then it’s a piece of cake. Only ask his guidance and rely on his practical expertise.

To start, it depends on, what design of acoustic guitar to desire to play. These strings are great for clipping with a plectrum held loosely between thumb and finger, and don’t vibrate a lot when struck. This can be significant if you’ve got a great guitar with a low action. Additionally, they’re a bit tough on the fretting fingers.

Of course, we have to build up those callouses, but medium gauge guitar strings need a little more finger pressure to hold them strongly on the frets.

There does not appear much difference between the two sets of strings, but believe me – you will feel it! The difference becomes clear when you attempt to bend one of the strings across to raise the note a semi tone and create that wailing blues sound that is wonderful.

It feels extremely hard – you simply can’t shove it far enough, easily enough. By comparison, most folks locate extra light strings a bit too lean (0.052 to 0.010). Saying that, many exceptional world-class guitarists use lights, as it depends upon your finger management.

STRING QUALITY IS NOT An ISSUE WITH MANUFACTURING PROCEDURES AND MODERN STRINGS.

Basic 80/20 bronze wound strings can be purchased fairly cheaply, but it is worth while spending a little more and buying phosphor bronze, which are a bit more mellow and longer lasting. Martin make an SP set, which is more durable and great for that special studio session, or important performance. But if you are a road player, don’t bother with the higher quality – change them regularly and play the guitar hard.

I am not much of a purist as far as guitar quality goes, but I do enjoy to have really good strings. Having analyzed many over the last 40 years or so, I always seem to come back to light gauge Martin strings, which are great for picking on acoustic blues guitar.

When playing with finger-style with bare finger, I typically use two pair a month and buy phosphor bronze strings in the SP range. For bottleneck I additionally use always SP and Medium gauge, same manufacturer.
