Often it is the little things that guitarists comprise that make all the difference. Many people have played Candy Man by Gary Davis, with various levels of success, for quite a while. I’ve played this for years, and then I determined to take a closer look to see what’s going on.

Gospel and Ragtime Blues Guitar Lessons – Reverend Gary Davis
Of course, we understand that he used just one finger and his thumb for his right hand picking, but that’s merely the beginning of his brilliance for blues music. Loosen up those fingers and let us go … Among The Last Great Blues Guitar Masters

The Very Best in Acoustic Blues From the Master

Reverend Gary Davis was uncommon in many respects. The complexity and musical richness of his blues guitar music is celebrated, and we could consider ourselves to be very blessed that his prowess remained undiminished in his later years. Unlike many blues guys, who quit playing and restarted after they had been ‘discovered’ again, Gary Davis never stopped playing guitar and many of his tunes in his can be located on Youtube.

GARY DAVIS – STREET BLUES SINGER

It was still his custom until he became in vogue once again, then started to record and play live gigs once again to play with the blues in the streets around Harlem. He was also quite willing to give guitar lessons to almost anyone that asked him to blues, it seems, and thus the skills were passed on to young guitarists such as many others and Stephan Grossman.

Oops, something went wrong.

Of course, his finger appeared to move separately from his thumb and could proceed fast. He also used finger picks to play guitar, which helps to be more accurate.

GOSPEL, RAGTIME OR BLUES GUITAR

He could break out of the alternating bass pattern at will, either to, and the timing of his thumb beats were rock solid, as you would expect double time and produce syncopated rhythms, or to create lightning single string runs.

For the latter, he would pick on a string alternately with his thumb and finger, as though he were using a plectrum. This was remarkable enough, but he frequently sang at the exact same time which is some trick – try it!

His thumb would also jump across to the high strings when needed, to complete a phrase or a run, giving the impression of other finger being used. The result was an unique encounter of ragtime guitar playing which has never been equaled.

Most guitar players have a kind of a running battle with their guitar strings, apart from the regular issues relating to keeping them in tune and changing them. The questions are rife for the student guitarist. It is not sufficient that we need to learn finger picking guitar, but on top of that, our fingers hurt and we are not certain if we are using the guitar strings that are right or not!

What type of strings are great for playing with acoustic blues guitar, for example. If you’re fortunate enough (and rich enough) to have a private teacher, then it’s a piece of cake. Merely ask his guidance and rely on his practical experience.

The best strings for acoustic blues guitar are actually the ones that suit your style, which might change over time, but first of all it depends an awful lot in your touch and the effect you need to give with your music.

BEST ACOUSTIC GUITAR STRINGS FOR BLUES

First off, it depends on, what design of acoustic guitar to want to play. This can be significant if you have a great guitar with a low action. Additionally, they’re a bit challenging on the fretting fingers.

Medium gauge guitar strings desire a little more finger pressure to hold them hard on the frets, although obviously, we must build up those callouses.

There doesn’t seem much difference between the two sets of strings, but believe me – you will feel it! The difference becomes obvious when you attempt to bend one of the strings across to raise the note a semitone and create that wailing blues sound that is lovely.

It feels really hard – you just can’t push it far enough, readily enough. By contrast, most people find extra light strings a bit too skinny (0.052 to 0.010). Saying that, many superb world-class guitarists use lights, as it all depends on your finger control.

STRING QUALITY ISN’T An ISSUE WITH MANUFACTURING PROCESSES AND MODERN STRINGS.

Fundamental 80/20 bronze wound strings can be purchased quite cheaply, but it is worth while spending a little more and buying phosphor bronze, which are a bit more mellow and longer lasting. Martin make performance that is important, or an SP set, which is more durable and great for that particular studio session. However, if you’re a road player, don’t trouble with the higher quality – play with the guitar hard and change them frequently.

I’m not much of a purist as far as guitar quality goes, but I do like to have strings that are really good. Having tested many over the last 40 years or so, I look to come back to light gauge Martin strings, which are great for picking acoustic blues guitar.

When playing with finger style with naked finger, I typically use two pair a month and purchase phosphor bronze strings in the SP range. For bottleneck I additionally use consistently SP and Medium gauge, same maker.
