Frequently it is the small things that guitarists include that make all the difference. Many of us have played Candy Man by Gary Davis, with various levels of success, for quite a while. I have played with this for years, and I determined to take a closer look to see what is happening.
Reverend Gary Davis
Of course, we understand that he used his thumb and only one finger for his right hand picking, but that is just the start of his brilliance for blues music. Loosen up those fingers and let’s go … Among The Last Great Blues Guitar Masters
The Best in Acoustic Blues From the Master
Reverend Gary Davis was uncommon in many respects. The sophistication and musical richness of his blues guitar music is celebrated, and we could consider ourselves to be really blessed that his art remained undiminished in his later years. Unlike many blues guys, who ceased playing and restarted after they’d been ‘discovered’ again, Gary Davis never quit playing guitar and many of his songs in his can be found on Youtube.
GARY DAVIS – ROAD BLUES SINGER
It was still his habit to play the blues in the roads around Harlem until he became in vogue once again, then began to record and play live shows once again. He was also quite willing to give guitar lessons to almost anyone that asked him to blues, it appears, and so the skills were passed on to young guitarists including Stephan Grossman and many others.

To begin with, Davis used the thumb and index finger of his right hand to fingerpick all of those sounds that were unbelievably intricate. Naturally, his finger could go fast and seemed to move separately from his thumb. He also used finger picks to play guitar, which helps to be more exact.
GOSPEL, RAGTIME OR BLUES GUITAR
He was very expert in any key, either major or minor, but it wasn’t this fact that exemplified his guitar music (for me.) The timing of his thumb beats were rock solid, as you would anticipate, and he could break out of the alternating bass pattern at will, either to double time and generate syncopated rhythms, or to produce lightning single string runs.
For the latter, he would pick a string alternately with his thumb and finger, as though he were using a plectrum. This was impressive enough, but he often sang at precisely the same time which is some trick – try it!
When needed, to complete a phrase or a run, giving the impression of other finger being used his thumb would also jump across to the high strings. The result was an unique experience of ragtime guitar playing which has never been equaled.

Most guitar players have a kind of a running battle with their guitar strings, apart from the ordinary issues relating to altering them and keeping them in tune. The questions are rife for the pupil guitarist. It is not sufficient that we must learn finger picking guitar, but on top of that, our fingers hurt and we aren’t sure if we’re using the guitar strings that are right or not!
What kind of strings are great for playing acoustic blues guitar, by way of example. Should you be fortunate enough (and rich enough) to have a personal teacher, then it is a piece of cake. Merely ask his advice and rely on his practical expertise. However, if you purchase blues guitar lessons from the internet, or on a DVD, you are mostly left to your own devices, relying on word of mouth from friends, or good old trial and error.
The best strings for acoustic blues guitar are actually the ones that suit your style, which might change over time, but first of all it depends an awful lot in your touch and the effect you desire to give with your music.
BEST ACOUSTIC GUITAR STRINGS FOR BLUES
To begin with, it depends on, what design of acoustic guitar to need to play. These strings are great for clipping with a plectrum held loosely between thumb and finger, and do not vibrate a lot when struck. This can be significant if you’ve got a great guitar with a low action. A string that vibrates too much can touch one of the frets, causing a terrible buzzing sound. Additionally, they’re a bit difficult on the fretting fingers.

Medium gauge guitar strings want a little more finger pressure to hold them firmly on the frets, although of course, we must build up those callouses.
There doesn’t seem much difference between the two sets of strings, but believe me – you will feel it! The difference becomes obvious when you try to flex one of the strings across to raise the note a semitone and produce that wailing blues sound that is wonderful.
It feels extremely hard – you only can not shove it far enough, easily enough. By comparison, most folks find additional light strings a bit too skinny (0.052 to 0.010). Saying that, many brilliant world class guitarists use lights, as it all depends on your finger management.
STRING QUALITY IS NOT An ISSUE WITH MODERN STRINGS AND PRODUCTION PROCEDURES.
Fundamental 80/20 bronze wound strings can be bought quite cheaply, but it’s worth while spending a little more and buying phosphor bronze, which are a bit more mellow and longer lasting. Martin make performance that is significant, or an SP set, which is more durable and excellent for that particular studio session. But in case you are a road player, do not bother with the quality that is higher – change them often and play with the guitar hard.
I am not much of a purist as far as guitar quality goes, but I do enjoy to have really good strings. Having analyzed many over the last 40 years or so, I seem to come back to light gauge Martin strings, which are great for picking on acoustic blues guitar.
When playing finger style with naked finger, I generally use two pair a month and buy phosphor bronze strings in the SP range. For bottleneck I also use always SP and Medium gauge, same manufacturer.
