GOSPEL, RAGTIME OR BLUES GUITAR
The timing of his thumb beats were rock solid, as you would anticipate, and he could break out of the alternating bass pattern at will, either to double time and generate syncopated rhythms, or to create lightning single string runs.
For the latter, he would pick a string alternately with finger and his thumb, as though he were using a plectrum. This was impressive enough, but he frequently sang at exactly the same time which is some trick – try it sometime!
His thumb would also jump across to the high strings when needed, to finish a run or a phrase, giving the impression of other finger used.

STRING QUALITY ISN’T An ISSUE WITH MANUFACTURING PROCEDURES AND MODERN STRINGS.
Fundamental 80/20 bronze wound strings can be purchased fairly cheaply, but it’s worth while spending a little more and buying phosphor bronze, which are a lasting. longer bit more mellow and Martin make significant performance, or an SP set, which is more durable and great for that special studio session. However, in case you are a street player, do not bother with the quality that is higher – play the guitar hard and change them often.
I’m not much of a purist as far as guitar quality goes, but I do like to have strings that are really good. Having tested many over the last 40 years or so, I always seem to come back to light gauge Martin strings, which are excellent for picking on acoustic blues guitar.
When playing with finger-style with bare finger, I generally use two pair a month and purchase phosphor bronze strings in the SP range. For bottleneck I additionally use Medium gauge, same manufacturer and consistently SP.
