Frequently it’s the little things that guitarists include that make all the difference. Many of us have played Candy Man by Gary Davis, with various degrees of success, for a long time. I’ve played this for years, and then I decided to take a closer look to see what is happening.

Gospel and Ragtime Blues Guitar Lessons – Reverend Gary Davis
Obviously, we understand he used just one finger and his thumb for his right hand picking, but that’s merely the beginning of his brilliance for blues music. Loosen up those fingers and let’s go … One Of The Last Great Blues Guitar Masters

The Very Best in Acoustic Blues From the Master

Reverend Gary Davis was unusual in many respects. The intricacy and musical fullness of his blues guitar music is legendary, and we could consider ourselves to be quite blessed that his prowess remained undiminished in his later years. Unlike many blues guys, who ceased playing and restarted after they had been ‘discovered’ again, Gary Davis never stopped playing guitar and many of his songs in his can be found on Youtube.

It was still his habit until he became in vogue once again, then started to record and play live gigs once again to play the blues in the streets around Harlem. He was also very willing to give blues guitar lessons to virtually anyone that asked him, it seems, and thus the skills were passed on to young guitarists such as Stephan Grossman and many others.

Oops, something went wrong.

Obviously, his finger could proceed quickly and seemed to move separately from his thumb. He also used finger picks to play guitar, which helps to be more accurate.

RAGTIME OR BLUES GUITAR, gOSPEL

He was quite expert in any key, either major or minor, but it was not this fact that exemplified his guitar music (for me.)

For the latter, he would pick on a string alternately with finger and his thumb, as though he were using a plectrum. This was notable enough, but he frequently sang at exactly the same time which is some trick – try it!

When needed, to complete a phrase or a run, giving the impression of other finger used his thumb would also leap across to the high strings.

Most guitar players have a sort of a running battle with their guitar strings, besides the normal issues relating to altering them and keeping them in tune. The questions are rife for the pupil guitarist. It’s not sufficient that we have to learn finger picking on guitar, but on top of that, our fingers damage and we aren’t certain if we’re using the right guitar strings or not!

What sort of strings are good for playing with acoustic blues guitar, for example. If you are fortunate enough (and rich enough) to have a personal teacher, then it is a piece of cake. Merely ask his guidance and rely on his practical experience. But if you purchase blues guitar lessons from the internet, or on a DVD, you’re mostly left to your own devices, relying on word of mouth from friends, or good old trial and error.

The best strings for acoustic blues guitar are actually the ones that suit your design, which might change over time, but first of all it depends an awful lot on your touch and the effect you want to give with your music.

To start, it depends on, what style of acoustic guitar to need to play. This can be important if you have a great guitar with a low action. A string that vibrates too much can touch one of the frets, causing a horrible buzzing sound. Also, they are a bit hard on the fretting fingers.

Medium gauge guitar strings want a little more finger pressure to hold them hard on the frets, although obviously, we must build up those callouses.

There doesn’t seem much difference between the two sets of strings, but believe me – you’ll feel it! The difference becomes clear when you try to flex one of the strings across to raise the note a semi-tone and create that wonderful wailing blues sound.

It feels really difficult – you just can not shove it far enough, readily enough. By comparison, most individuals find extra light strings a bit too thin (0.052 to 0.010). Saying that, many brilliant world class guitarists use lights, as it is dependent upon your finger control.

STRING QUALITY IS NOT An ISSUE WITH PRODUCTION PROCEDURES AND MODERN STRINGS.

Basic 80/20 bronze wound strings can be bought fairly cheaply, but it is worth while phosphor bronze, which are a lasting. longer bit more mellow and purchasing spending a little more and Martin make important performance, or an SP set, which is more durable and great for that special studio session. However, if you are a road player, do not bother with the quality that is higher – play with the guitar hard and change them regularly.

I am not much of a purist as far as guitar quality goes, but I do like to have really good strings. Having tested many over the last 40 years or so, I always seem to come back to light gauge Martin strings, which are great for picking acoustic blues guitar.

When playing finger style with bare finger, I usually use two pair a month and buy phosphor bronze strings in the SP range. For bottleneck I also use Medium gauge, same manufacturer and consistently SP.
