Often it’s the small things that guitarists comprise that make all the difference. Many of us have played with Candy Man by Gary Davis, with various amounts of success, for a long time. I have played with this for years, and I decided to take a closer look to see what’s happening.

Gospel and Ragtime Blues Guitar Lessons – Reverend Gary Davis
Needless to say, we know that he used only one finger and his thumb for his right hand picking, but that is only the beginning of his brilliance for blues music. Loosen up those fingers and let’s go … One Of The Last Great Blues Guitar Masters

The Best in Acoustic Blues From the Master

Reverend Gary Davis was uncommon in many respects. The intricacy and musical fullness of his blues guitar music is celebrated, and we could consider ourselves to be quite blessed that his art remained undiminished in his later years. Unlike many blues guys, who quit playing and restarted after they’d been ‘discovered’ again, Gary Davis never ceased playing guitar and many of his songs in his can be found on Youtube.

GARY DAVIS – ROAD BLUES VOCALIST

It was still his custom to play the blues in the streets around Harlem once again, then started to record and play live shows once again until he became in vogue. He was also very willing to give blues guitar lessons to practically anyone that asked him, it appears, and so the skills were passed on to young guitarists such as Stephan Grossman and many others.

Oops, something went wrong.

Needless to say, his finger could go fast and seemed to move separately from his thumb. He also used finger picks to play guitar, which helps to be more accurate.

He could break out of the alternating bass pattern at will, either to, and the timing of his thumb beats were rock solid, as you’d anticipate double time and create syncopated rhythms, or to create lightning fast single string runs.

For the latter, he would pick on a string alternately with his thumb and finger, as though he were using a plectrum. This was impressive enough, but he often sang at the same time which is some trick – try it sometime!

When needed, to finish a phrase or a run, giving the impression of other finger used his thumb would additionally leap across to the high strings. The result was an unique encounter of ragtime guitar playing which has never been equaled.

Most guitar players have a kind of a running battle with their guitar strings, aside from the regular issues relating to keeping them in tune and changing them. The questions are rife for the pupil guitarist. It’s not satisfactory that we need to learn finger picking guitar, but on top of that, our fingers damage and we are not sure if we’re using the guitar strings that are right or not!

What kind of strings are not bad for playing acoustic blues guitar, for example. If you are lucky enough (and rich enough) to have a personal teacher, then it is a piece of cake. Merely ask his guidance and rely on his practical experience. But if you purchase blues guitar lessons from the net, or on a DVD, you’re mostly left to your own devices, relying on word of mouth from friends, or good old trial and error.

The best strings for acoustic blues guitar are actually the ones that suit your design, which might change over time, but first of all it depends an awful lot on your own touch and the effect you need to give with your music.

To start, it depends on, what style of acoustic guitar to desire to play. Blue grass players go for a medium gauge guitar string, which goes from 0.054 inch to 0.013 inch. This can be important if you have a great guitar with a low action. A string that vibrates too much can touch one of the frets, causing a terrible buzzing sound. Also, they’re a bit challenging on the fretting fingers.

Obviously, we must build up those callouses, but medium gauge guitar strings need a little more finger pressure to hold them strongly on the frets. For blues style finger picking, most players prefer light gauge, which range from 0.054 to 0.011 inch.

There doesn’t seem much difference between the two sets of strings, but believe me – you’ll feel it! The difference becomes clear when you try to bend one of the strings across to raise the note a semitone and produce that wailing blues sound that is wonderful.

It feels really difficult – you just can not push it far enough, easily enough. By contrast, most folks locate additional light strings a bit too lean (0.052 to 0.010). Saying that, many exceptional world-class guitarists use lights, as it is dependent upon your finger control.

STRING QUALITY IS NOT An ISSUE WITH PRODUCTION PROCEDURES AND MODERN STRINGS.

Fundamental 80/20 bronze wound strings can be purchased fairly cheaply, but it’s worth while spending a little more and purchasing phosphor bronze, which are a bit more mellow and longer lasting. Martin make performance that is important, or an SP set, which is stronger and great for that special studio session. However, if you’re a street player, don’t trouble with the quality that is higher – play with the guitar hard and change them regularly.

I’m not much of a purist as far as guitar quality goes, but I do enjoy to have really good strings. Having analyzed many over the last 40 years or so, I always seem to come back to light gauge Martin strings, which are excellent for picking on acoustic blues guitar.

When playing finger style with naked finger, I buy phosphor bronze strings in the SP range and generally use two pair a month. For bottleneck I additionally use consistently SP and Medium gauge, same manufacturer.
