Frequently it’s the little things that guitarists include that make all the difference. Many of us have played with Candy Man by Gary Davis, with various amounts of success, for quite a long time. I’ve played this for years, and I determined to take a closer look to see what is going on.
Reverend Gary Davis
Needless to say, we know he used his thumb and only one finger for his right hand picking, but that’s just the start of his genius for blues music. Loosen up those fingers and let us go … One Of The Last Great Blues Guitar Masters
The Very Best in Acoustic Blues From the Master
Reverend Gary Davis was uncommon in many regards. The complexity and musical richness of his blues guitar music is legendary, and we could consider ourselves to be very fortunate that his art remained undiminished in his later years. Unlike many blues men, who stopped playing and restarted after they’d been ‘discovered’ again, Gary Davis never quit playing guitar and many of his tunes in his can be located on Youtube.
GARY DAVIS – ROAD BLUES VOCALIST
It was still his custom to play the blues in the roads around Harlem once again, then began to record and play live shows once again until he became in vogue. He was also very willing to give blues guitar lessons to nearly anyone that asked him, it seems, and thus the skills were passed on to young guitarists for example Stephan Grossman and many others.

Needless to say, his finger seemed to move independently from his thumb and could move fast. He also used finger picks to play guitar, which helps to be more precise.
GOSPEL, RAGTIME OR BLUES GUITAR
He was quite skillful in any key, either major or minor, but it wasn’t this fact that exemplified his guitar music (for me.)
For the latter, he would pick on a string alternately with finger and his thumb, as though he were using a plectrum. This was notable enough, but he often sang at exactly the same time which is some trick – try it sometime!
When needed, to finish a run or a phrase, giving the impression of other finger being used his thumb would also jump across to the high strings.

Most guitar players have a kind of a running battle with their guitar strings, aside from the ordinary issues relating to keeping them in tune and changing them. The questions are rife for the pupil guitarist. It is not sufficient that we must learn finger picking on guitar, but on top of that, our fingers hurt and we are not sure if we’re using the right guitar strings or not!
What kind of strings are good for playing acoustic blues guitar, for example. In case you are fortunate enough (and rich enough) to have a personal teacher, then it’s a piece of cake. Just ask his guidance and rely on his practical expertise. However, if you purchase blues guitar lessons from the web, or on a DVD, you’re generally left to your own devices, relying on word of mouth from friends, or good old trial and error.
The best strings for acoustic blues guitar are really the ones that suit your style, which might change over time, but first of all it depends an awful lot on your touch and the effect you desire to give with your music.
To start, it depends on, what design of acoustic guitar to desire to play. Blue grass musicians go for a medium gauge guitar string, which goes from 0.054 inch to 0.013 inch. This can be significant if you have a great guitar with a low action. Additionally, they are a bit challenging on the fretting fingers.

Of course, we must build up those callouses, but medium gauge guitar strings need a little more finger pressure to hold them hard on the frets.
There does not appear much difference between the two sets of strings, but believe me – you’ll feel it! The difference becomes apparent when you attempt to bend one of the strings across to increase the note a semi-tone and create that wailing blues sound that is wonderful.
It feels extremely difficult – you simply can’t shove it far enough, easily enough. By contrast, most people find extra light strings a bit too skinny (0.052 to 0.010). Saying that, many superb world-class guitarists use lights, as it depends on your finger control.
STRING QUALITY ISN’T An ISSUE WITH MODERN STRINGS AND PRODUCTION PROCEDURES.
Fundamental 80/20 bronze wound strings can be purchased fairly cheaply, but it is worth while phosphor bronze, which are a lasting. longer bit more mellow and purchasing spending a little more and Martin make an SP set, which is stronger and great for that particular studio session, or performance that is important. But in case you are a road player, don’t trouble with the higher quality – change them frequently and play with the guitar hard.
I am not much of a purist as far as guitar quality goes, but I do like to have really good strings. Having analyzed many over the last 40 years or so, I look to come back to light gauge Martin strings, which are great for picking on acoustic blues guitar.
When playing with fingerstyle with naked finger, I usually use two pair a month and purchase phosphor bronze strings in the SP range. For bottleneck I also use Medium gauge, same maker and constantly SP.
