Often it’s the little matters that guitarists include that make all the difference. Many of us have played with Candy Man by Gary Davis, with various degrees of success, for quite a long time. I’ve played with this for years, and I determined to take a closer look to see what’s going on.

Reverend Gary Davis
Needless to say, we understand he used his thumb and only one finger for his right hand picking, but that’s only the beginning of his genius for blues music. Loosen up those fingers and let’s go … Among The Last Great Blues Guitar Masters

The Best in Acoustic Blues From the Master

Reverend Gary Davis was uncommon in many regards. The complexity and musical richness of his blues guitar music is legendary, and we could consider ourselves to be very fortunate that his prowess remained undiminished in his later years. Unlike many blues men, who stopped playing and restarted after they’d been ‘discovered’ again, Gary Davis never stopped playing guitar and many of his tunes in his can be found on Youtube.

GARY DAVIS – STREET BLUES VOCALIST

It was still his custom until he became in vogue once again, then began to record and play live gigs once again to play the blues in the roads around Harlem. He was also quite willing to give guitar lessons to almost anyone that asked him to blues, it appears, and so the skills were passed on to young guitarists for example many others and Stephan Grossman.

Oops, something went wrong.

Needless to say, his finger seemed to move independently from his thumb and could go quickly. He also used finger picks to play guitar, which helps to be more accurate.

RAGTIME OR BLUES GUITAR, gOSPEL

He was very proficient in any key, either major or minor, but it wasn’t this fact that exemplified his guitar music (for me.)

For the latter, he’d pick on a string alternately with finger and his thumb, as though he were using a plectrum. This was notable enough, but he frequently sang at exactly the same time which is some trick – try it!

When needed, to complete a run or a phrase, giving the impression of other finger being used his thumb would also jump across to the high strings. The result was an unique encounter of ragtime guitar playing which has never been equaled.

Most guitar players have a kind of a running battle with their guitar strings, apart from the ordinary issues relating to altering them and keeping them in tune. The questions are rife for the pupil guitarist. It’s not satisfactory that we must learn finger picking guitar, but on top of that, our fingers damage and we aren’t certain if we’re using the guitar strings that are right or not!

What sort of strings are good for playing with acoustic blues guitar, by way of example. Should you be lucky enough (and rich enough) to have a private teacher, then it’s a piece of cake. Just ask his guidance and rely on his practical expertise.

To begin with, it depends on, what design of acoustic guitar to want to play. Blue grass musicians go for a medium gauge guitar string, which goes from 0.054 inch to 0.013 inch. These strings are great for clipping with a plectrum held loosely between thumb and finger, and do not vibrate a lot when hit. This can be significant if you’ve got a great guitar with a low action. Additionally, they are a bit difficult on the fretting fingers.

Of course, we have to build up those callouses, but medium gauge guitar strings want a little more finger pressure to hold them strongly on the frets. For blues style finger picking, most players prefer light gauge, which range from 0.054 to 0.011 inch.

There does not seem much difference between the two sets of strings, but believe me – you will feel it! The difference becomes apparent when you attempt to flex one of the strings across to increase the note a semitone and create that wailing blues sound that is wonderful.

It feels extremely difficult – you only can’t push it far enough, easily enough. By contrast, most folks locate additional light strings a bit too thin (0.052 to 0.010). Saying that, many brilliant world-class guitarists use lights, as it is dependent upon your finger management.

STRING QUALITY ISN’T An ISSUE WITH MODERN STRINGS AND MANUFACTURING PROCEDURES.

Basic 80/20 bronze wound strings can be purchased fairly cheaply, but it’s worth while phosphor bronze, which are a lasting. longer bit more mellow and buying spending a little more and Martin make important performance, or an SP set, which is more durable and excellent for that special studio session. But if you are a street player, do not bother with the higher quality – change them often and play the guitar hard.

I’m not much of a purist as far as guitar quality goes, but I do like to have strings that are great. Having analyzed many over the last 40 years or so, I seem to come back to light gauge Martin strings, which are excellent for picking on acoustic blues guitar.

When playing with finger-style with bare finger, I purchase phosphor bronze strings in the SP range and generally use two pair a month. For bottleneck I additionally use always SP and Medium gauge, same maker.
