Often it’s the little things that guitarists comprise that make all the difference. Many people have played Candy Man by Gary Davis, with various degrees of success, for a long time. I have played this for years, and I determined to take a closer look to see what’s going on.

Gospel and Ragtime Blues Guitar Lessons – Reverend Gary Davis
Needless to say, we understand that he used only one finger and his thumb for his right hand picking, but that’s merely the beginning of his brilliance for blues music. Loosen up those fingers and let’s go … One Of The Last Great Blues Guitar Masters

The Very Best in Acoustic Blues From the Master

Reverend Gary Davis was not common in many respects. The complexity and musical fullness of his blues guitar music is celebrated, and we could consider ourselves to be quite fortunate that his prowess remained undiminished in his later years. Unlike many blues guys, who stopped playing and restarted after they had been ‘discovered’ again, Gary Davis never quit playing guitar and many of his songs in his can be found on Youtube.

GARY DAVIS – STREET BLUES VOCALIST

It was still his custom until he became in vogue once again, then began to record and play live shows once again to play with the blues in the roads around Harlem. He was also quite willing to give guitar lessons to nearly anyone that asked him to blues, it seems, and thus the skills were passed on to young guitarists including many others and Stephan Grossman.

Oops, something went wrong.

Needless to say, his finger could move quickly and appeared to move independently from his thumb. He also used finger picks to play guitar, which helps to be more exact.

GOSPEL, RAGTIME OR BLUES GUITAR

He was very proficient in any key, either major or minor, but it was not this fact that exemplified his guitar music (for me.) The timing of his thumb beats were rock solid, as you would anticipate, and he could break out of the alternating bass pattern at will, either to double time and produce syncopated rhythms, or to produce lightning fast single string runs.

For the latter, he would pick on a string alternately with finger and his thumb, as though he were using a plectrum. This was impressive enough, but he frequently sang at the same time which is some trick – try it sometime!

When needed, to complete a run or a phrase, giving the impression of other finger being used his thumb would additionally jump across to the high strings.

Most guitar players have a sort of a running battle with their guitar strings, aside from the ordinary issues relating to keeping them in tune and altering them. The questions are rife for the pupil guitarist. It’s not satisfactory that we need to learn finger picking guitar, but on top of that, our fingers damage and we are not sure if we are using the guitar strings that are right or not!

What sort of strings are good for playing with acoustic blues guitar, by way of example. If you’re fortunate enough (and rich enough) to have a private teacher, then it is a piece of cake. Only ask his advice and rely on his practical experience. However, if you buy blues guitar lessons from the web, or on a DVD, you’re usually left to your own devices, relying on word of mouth from friends, or good old trial and error.

The best strings for acoustic blues guitar are actually the ones that suit your style, which might change over time, but first of all it depends an awful lot in your touch and the effect you need to give with your music.

To start, it depends on, what design of acoustic guitar to want to play. Blue grass players go for a medium gauge guitar string, which goes from 0.054 inch to 0.013 inch. This can be important if you have a great guitar with a low action. A string that vibrates too much can touch one of the frets, causing a terrible buzzing sound. Also, they are a bit tough on the fretting fingers.

Obviously, we need to build up those callouses, but medium gauge guitar strings need a little more finger pressure to hold them strongly on the frets.

There does not appear much difference between the two sets of strings, but believe me – you will feel it! The difference becomes apparent when you try to flex one of the strings across to increase the note a semi tone and create that wailing blues sound that is wonderful.

It feels extremely hard – you simply can not shove it far enough, easily enough. By contrast, most folks locate additional light strings a bit too lean (0.052 to 0.010). Saying that, many superb world-class guitarists use lights, as it all depends upon your finger control.

STRING QUALITY IS NOT An ISSUE WITH MODERN STRINGS AND MANUFACTURING METHODS.

Basic 80/20 bronze wound strings can be bought fairly cheaply, but it’s worth while spending a little more and buying phosphor bronze, which are a bit more mellow and longer lasting. Martin make an SP set, which is more durable and great for that special studio session, or performance that is significant. However, if you are a street player, don’t bother with the higher quality – play the guitar hard and change them regularly.

I’m not much of a purist as far as guitar quality goes, but I do enjoy to have strings that are great. Having analyzed many over the last 40 years or so, I always seem to come back to light gauge Martin strings, which are excellent for picking on acoustic blues guitar.

When playing with finger style with naked finger, I purchase phosphor bronze strings in the SP range and normally use two pair a month. For bottleneck I additionally use Medium gauge, same producer and constantly SP.
