From its origin in the South, the blues’ simple but expressive forms had become by the 1960s among the most significant influences on the growth of music that is popular throughout the United States.
Although instrumental accompaniment is nearly worldwide in the blues, the blues is basically a vocal kind. Blues songs are lyrical rather than narrative; blues vocalists are expressing feelings as opposed to telling stories. The emotion expressed is normally one of melancholy or depression, commonly due to difficulties in love.
Normally the first two and a half measures of each line are dedicated to a half, the last measure and singing comprising an instrumental “break” that answers, repeats, or complements the vocal line.

African influences are clear in the blues tonality, the call and response pattern of the imitation of vocal idioms by instruments, the falsetto break in the vocal style, and the repeated refrain construction of the blues stanza, particularly the guitar and harmonica.
The origins of the blues are badly documented. Blues developed in the southern United States after the American Civil War (1861–65). It was influenced by work songs and field hollers, minstrel show music, ragtime, church music, and the folk and popular music of the white people. Southern black men, most of whom came from the milieu of agricultural workers derived from and largely played blues.
The first references to blues date s back to the 1890s and early 1900. In 1912 black bandleader W.C. Handy’s composition “Memphis Blues” was published. It became very popular, and thereafter many other Tin Pan Alley tunes entitled blues started to appear.

The blues of the Carolinas and Georgia is noted for its clarity of enunciation and regularity of beat. Impacted by white and ragtime folk music, it’s more melodic than the Texas and Mississippi styles. Blind Willie McTell and Blind Boy Fuller were representative of this style.
The Texas blues is characterized by high, clear singing accompanied by supple guitar lines that consist usually of single -string picked arpeggios rather than strummed chords. Blind Lemon Jefferson was the most influential Texas bluesman. Mississippi Delta blues is the most intense of the three styles and has been the most powerful. Vocally, it’s the most language-like, and the guitar accompaniment is percussive and rhythmic; a bottleneck or a slide is frequently used. The Mississippi style is represented by Charley Patton, Eddie (“Son”) House, and Robert Johnson, among others.

Rainey, Ma [Credit: Archive Photographs]The first blues records were made in the 1920s by black women such as Mamie Smith, Ma Rainey, Ida Cox, and Bessie Smith. These performers were primarily stage vocalists backed by jazz bands; their style is called classic blues.
The World Wars and the Great Depression caused the geographical dispersal of the blues as millions of blacks left the South for the cities of the North. The blues became adjusted to the more complex urban surroundings. The amplified harmonica and the electric guitar created a driving sound of rhythmic and emotional intensity that was great.

John Lee Hooker settled in Detroit, and on the West Coast Aaron (“T-Bone”) Walker developed a style later adopted by Riley (“B.B.”) King.
It was Chicago, nevertheless, that played the greatest role in the growth of urban blues. After World War II they were supplanted by a new generation of bluesmen that contained Muddy Waters, Chester Arthur Burnett (Howlin’ Wolf), Elmore James, Little Walter Jacobs, Buddy Guy, and Koko Taylor.
The blues have affected many other musical styles. Blues and jazz are closely connected; such seminal jazzmen as Louis Armstrong and Jelly Roll Morton employed blues elements within their music. Rhythm and soul music and blues also reveal obvious blues tonalities and forms. The blues have had their greatest effect on rock music.
Rock singers like Elvis Presley frequently used blues material. British rock musicians in the 1960s, John Mayall, Eric Clapton, and especially the Rolling Stones, were powerfully affected by the blues, as were such American rock musicians as Paul Butterfield, Mike Bloomfield, and the Allman Brothers Band.
